Die junge Edhel schämt sich für ihre spitzen Elfenohren und geht daher allen Menschen aus dem Weg. Einzig und allein bei ihrem Pferd Caron fühlt sie sich wirklich wohl und geborgen. Das liegt auch daran, dass Caron ihrem Vater gehörte, der bei einem Unfall ums Leben kam. Seitdem leben Edhel und ihre Mutter Geneva allein, doch die Beziehung der beiden ist von großen Schwierigkeiten geprägt, ständig kriegen sie sich in die Haare. Geneva will ihre Tochter schließlich sogar dazu drängen, sich die Ohren operieren zu lassen, um sich nicht mehr ausgegrenzt zu fühlen. Doch dann begegnet das junge Mädchen einem skurrilen Hausmeister, der sie in das Reich der Fantasie entführt und plötzlich ist alles anders: Edhel glaubt fortan nämlich fest daran, dass sie ins Königreich der Elfen gehört und nicht in die Welt der Menschen gehört.
