This film, made as a "twin" of A ilha dos amores, was planned as a poetic documentary on the enigmatic life of Wenceslau de Moraes (1855-1929), the great Portuguese writer who lived in the Far East. Verbal testimony, photographs, manuscripts, images of Lisbon, Macao, Kobe and Tokushima in Moraes' time are set side by side with A ilha dos amores and with de Moraes' writings. The director, Paulo Rocha, visited places where Moraes was still remembered, interviewed the writers descendants, consulted archives, rummaged through memories, appointment books, postcards, diaries and calendars from the private life of the 19th century. And above all he set out on a new journey, from Lisbon to Macao to Kobe until he reached Tokushima, where Moraes lived through the final ruin of his life and where Rocha tracks down, between the city and the cemetery, the living presence of places and the memories of individuals.

As we wander through the streets we meet an historian, a maritime archaeologist, a fisherman, the "doorman" of the island, a dancer, many spirits...

"Mulheres que Transformam a Ilha" is a narrative about the fusion between Woman and social impact, is the portrait of the doubts, opportunities, accesses, sweat, victories and conquests of spaces lived by them.

This island is their last stand – there they live in a way not possible in the continent – free love, no possessions, brotherhood… In the continent, a killer is sent to the island to kill the revolutionary leaders. The killer is a woman , Ana (Neide Ribeiro). She will go there as a journalist sent there to interview the leaders of the movement. On arriving to the island, she will find out that things were much different from what she expected. Will Ana be involved by the "island of forbidden pleasures." Will she fulfill her mission?

The world ends tomorrow, nothing has changed around here.

At the end of the busy year of 1997, we ended up filming a documentary produced by Jorge Timm. Jorjão's restaurant was very close to the Uruguay River, on Ilha Redonda, and there was a river flood, which rose about eleven meters above the normal level - two meters less than the record high of 1983 - and displaced many people. Claudio Baiestorf, Carli and I went there to record the damage, interview homeless people and invent delusions. We arrived at the place and realized that Jorge had greatly exaggerated, via telephone, the size of the flood damage. There were not even homeless people. Thanks to warnings from the civil defense, all residents had taken precautions. We opened a whiskey and started filming anyway.
