The Warsaw Uprising. Five people hiding in a basement under an apartment complex get buried by the rubble when it's bombed by the Germans. With no way of escape, the people gradually descend into madness.

In the autumn of 1944, contrary to the order of the Nazi command to evacuate to the south, residents of the Norwegian town of Kirkenes took refuge in an abandoned mine. The command of the Soviet Army became aware of the intentions of the Nazis to blow up the old tunnels of the city, but the Soviet soldiers managed to prevent the tragedy.

The Harlem Cultural Festival of that year, which would come to be known as “Black Woodstock,” had, on its surface, little in common with the upstate hootenanny. Held in Harlem at Mount Morris (what is now Marcus Garvey) Park, it was a self-consciously urban affair, a concert series rather than a one-off, and already in its third year.

Why show a protest artist’s 1990s radical murals? Are they still relevant today? Mary Perry Stone, a former WPA sculptor, didn’t drink, smoke or lead a wild life. Her passion was being a social protest artist; it remained so throughout her life. When she was in her eighties and early nineties, Mary painted many murals depicting what she deemed the horrors of Capitalism. Her art was her own, expressive and powerful.
