Film uncovers the true story behind legendary Chicano activist Oscar Zeta Acosta, the real-life inspiration for Hunter S. Thompson's "Dr. Gonzo"

The vast area of the American prairie tells the story of a 150 year experiment: the settlement of the American plains. The radical plan of a scientist couple from New York is to make the Great Plains public property, a common area, and reverse it to its original condition. A rise in tourism and efficient buffalo meat production will provide people of this region with security and a new future.

2 Crew Leaders and their teams collide due to a deal gone bad.

In 1972 a coal-waste dam owned by the Pittston Company collapsed at the head of a crowded hollow in southern West Virginia. A wall of sludge, debris, and water tore through the valley below, leaving in its wake 125 dead and 4,000 homeless. Interviews with survivors, representatives of union and citizen’s groups, and officials of the Pittston Company are juxtaposed with actual footage of the flood and scenes of the ensuing devastation. As reasons for the disaster are sought out and examined, evidence mounts that company officials knew of the hazard in advance of the flood, and that the dam was in violation of state and federal regulations. The Pittston Company, however, continued to deny any wrongdoing, maintaining that the disaster was an “act of God.”

A couple, Shokufeh and Iman who plan to flee Iran travel to the port city of Anzali to meet a man who is to smuggle them across the border. They await him by the side of a lagoon. They accidentally drop their bag of money and jewelry into the lagoon. Iman tries to jump in and find the bag but drowns in the process. A diver called Bahram the Buffalo is assigned to find Iman’s body in the lagoon and a relationship begins to develop between him and Shokufeh…

During the 1970s I shot, helped to make, or commissioned about ten document films, mainly about film-makers. This film is one of them. It was made with Dan Ochiva, who acted as cameraman on about half of the footage. I shot the rest, and then edited the film. It is a record of a conference held at the State University of New York at Buffalo on March 22-25, 1973. Among the participants filmed were Gerald O'Grady (who organized the conference), Will Hindle, Stan Brakhage, Jonas Mekas, Robert Creeley, Bruce Baillie, Scott Bartlett, Hollis Frampton, Ken Jacobs, Ed Pincus, Stan Vanderbeek, Ed Emshwiller, Sally Dixon, James Cox. Though American veterans liberated others worldwide at immense sacrifice, a little told American story is the unique liberation of the Tuscan people by the Buffalo Soldiers of WWII who returned home to the "Jim Crow" United States. The impoverished, starving people of Tuscany owe their lives to the Buffalo Soldiers, whom they lovingly dubbed "Giganti Buoni" (Good Giants).

Learn how to skin the animal starting at the back, how to butcher it using both stone and steel tools, how to preserve the brain for brain-tanning at a later date, how to remove and prepare tendons for sinew, how to prepare the stomachs for use as a cooking vessel. Set along the southern coast of Vietnam during the French occupation in the 1940s, water is everywhere, giving life and bringing decay and rot. Kim is 15; his father and step-mother have two buffalo, their lifeline as subsistence rice farmers. During the rainy season, there's no grass and the buffalo are starving. Kim volunteers to take the beasts inland to find food. On this coming-of-age journey, Kim sees men mistreat women, men fight with men, and French taxes rob the poor. He works for Lap, a buffalo herder whose past is entangled with Kim's parents, and he makes friends who will lead him to his place in the world.

A rebellious Thai-American girl, sent to live with relatives in rural Thailand, clashes with an entire village when she befriends a mute peasant boy and inspires him to compete in the annual buffalo race.

Buffalo consists of a few handheld, almost still shots, that bring up questions concerning the border of reality and fiction, presence and past in memory reconstructed.
