This video work forms part of a broader attempt to re-envision Irish cultural history in order to better understand the Now, to follow repressed lines of development that, if pursued, might have led Ireland out of its insular tendencies much earlier. The life and works of Irish writer Stephen MacKenna (1872-1934) form the documentary material on which the piece is built. MacKenna is best known for his translation from Ancient Greek of Third century philosopher Plotinus.

One day he sees and falls in love with a pretty pair of feet, belonging to Ruth Warren, a schoolteacher who is lusted after by Norton Colburton, a dissolute playboy. Ruth is about to marry Colburton, but at the last minute runs away and decides to take a Cook's tour. On the boat, she meets Grogan, who has inherited a fortune, and recognizing the feet, he falls in love with their owner.

In this documentation of a performance at the Andrea Rosen Gallery in New York, Donegan uses her body as an art-making tool, and toys with identity politics as well.

It reveals discrimination in housing and employment, and laws permitting arbitrary arrest and imprisonment of Irish nationalists. The film investigates the pervasive atmosphere of fear and mistrust - constant surveillance of neighborhoods and business districts, television advertisements encouraging citizens to report suspicious neighbors to British troops, and the commonplace bombings and shootings. Giving voice to soldiers on both sides and to ordinary citizens who must live in wartime circumstances, Irish Ways provides important background to the continuing civil war over Ireland.
