"Little Red Riding Hood" set in an urban jungle in the not-too-distant future. It's Christmas time, and Earth is God's Gameboy. Little Red puts on provocative clothing and heads for a night on the town. Her dad, after yelling at her, dons his Santa suit and leaves for work. Turns out he's a cat burglar. While he's in a fancy flat putting swag in his bag, he's surprised by the lady of the house. Meanwhile, Little Red, who has stopped to buy reefer, is accosted by Wolfgang, an aggressive and cannibalistic cop. After dining, he heads for home, where a surprise awaits.

This documentary captures the sounds and images of a nearly forgotten era in film history when African American filmmakers and studios created “race movies” exclusively for black audiences. The best of these films attempted to counter the demeaning stereotypes of black Americans prevalent in the popular culture of the day. About 500 films were produced, yet only about 100 still exist. Filmmaking pioneers like Oscar Micheaux, the Noble brothers, and Spencer Williams, Jr. left a lasting influence on black filmmakers, and inspired generations of audiences who finally saw their own lives reflected on the silver screen.

A young man with a love of horses, Scott Jordan (Roddy McDowall) lives on the family ranch with his uncle Bill (Damian O’Flynn). When he buys a wild stallion from his black-sheep cousin Daniel (Rand Brooks), Scott names the horse Midnight and does his best to tame him. But when the sheriff (Sky King’s Kirby Grant) suspects the stallion was stolen and Daniel’s plan to get rid of the horse ends with a man being trampled, Scott must prove Midnight acted in self-defense before his uncle destroys him. The fourth of six films McDowall coproduced and starred in for Monogram Pictures, Black Midnight was directed by Oscar “Budd” Boetticher, whose seven Westerns with Randolph Scott are considered classics of the genre.

From the height of Black-owned farms at 14% in 1910 to less than 2% today, Leah and her Soul Fire Farm cohorts help propel a returning generation of young Black farmers to reclaim their sacred connection to land. All the while, fighting for the passage of landmark legislation: the Justice for Black Farmers Act. This rising generation of young Black farmers find strength in the deep historical knowledge of African agrarianism — and its potential to save the planet.
