In the 1980s, dozens of Namibian children were brought up in socialist Czechoslovakia. The aim of this special education program was to raise a new generation of children as a politically conscious elite. But the experiment ended in the early 1990s following fundamental political changes in both countries. The children were forcibly repatriated back to Namibia where they were unable to adapt culturally due to never having completed their elementary education nor receiving any formal language and psychological training. Documentary filmmakers tracked down the now-adult Namibian children and followed their fates both in Namibia and in the Czech Republic over the course of three years.

Lutz Eisholz’s first feature film was produced at West Berlin’s German Film and TV Academy. In an experimental documentary he portrays the working class outcast Bruno S., who prowls the city as a street musician, performing his own songs. The film unfolds Bruno’s story: abandoned by his mother as a child, he was maltreated in correctional institutions in Nazi Germany. On release after WWII he found work but started performing at the same time as a self-taught musician and poet. Although incapable of “normal” human bonding, he was still able to rejoice in life. When Werner Herzog saw this film he recognized Bruno’s potential and hired him to play starring roles in The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (1974), Heart of Glass (1976) and Stroszek (1977).

In a conventionalised, excessive world where people conformistly wear black, the new classmate Rosa attracts attention by bringing colour into the class. Nero fears for homogeneity and coherence, so he starts making efforts to assimilate Rosa. Rosa stands up self-confident for her identity, going on to wear coloured clothes. As Nero rans out of patience for Rosa's behavior, he plans to force Rosa to integrate against her will. When suddenly the light expires and everybody feels threatened getting lost in black, Rosa wearing colour is the needed escape. A parable about conformism and the importance of diversity in society.
