A collaborative work based on Joanna Spyri's novel, Heidi.. The entire work consisted of a fabricated set, a group of partial and full life-size rubber figures, two large backdrop paintings, and a video tape shot entirely on the set. The set was installed at the center of the gallery (Galerie Krinzinger, Vienna)... We were interested in imitating film and television production, and exaggerating the fractured process of film. - Paul McCarthy In Heidi we toyed with this illusionary nature by treating the doubles and stand-ins for the actors as obvious sculpture, more in the manner of a puppet show than traditional film. - Mike Kelley

"Traumatic Measuresis" an exploration of Saavedra’s personal trauma when he was stabbed in Bogota, Colombia. The film realises his further search for rational explanations as a result of flashbacks experienced in London whilst encountering stories about knife crime. The project fixes on his mind’s experience, obsessed with an irrational need to understand and assess the event through a series of experiments and re-enactments. Inspired by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and his 1982 speech about the European obsession with measurement and categorization and the “Studies in Motion” by Muybridge, Saavedra designed specific experiments and grids to recreate the situation, both from the perspectives of the victim and the perpetrator, understanding the feelings from both sides of the crime through repetition. Though photography is used as a documenting mechanism to understand experiences, video is the media that enable Saavedra to travel through time back to the moment when the stabbing occurred.

The video works 'Traumasyl' and 'Jukai, the Sea of Trees' are characterized by a cinematic and associative style, in which atmosphere plays an important role. There is certainly no word of a plot or unambiguous content. Influenced by the Italian film maker Michelangelo Antonioni, he draws a picture here of mental and physical oppression. A monitor in an empty room alternately shows the faces of a woman and a man. Their lips are moving, but you cannot hear their voices. Their faces are 'blindfolded', and 'tied up' with a rope which is fastened around the monitor. Then there are images of the woman in the empty room in which she looks at herself on the screen and in a broken mirror. Locked up in this circuit and her own thoughts, she is unable to make contact.

Traumatografo is a film, the principal purpose of which is to comfort those who fear death by the gallows or scaffold. It is divided into three parts: in the first, slaughter by automobile is shown; in the third, by military engagements; in the center section children pantomime syncopated movements from top to bottom. The secret, twilight imaginings of a wreckless character in the horrifying motion of falling or ejection in triplicate from an auto-trauma-mobile, the alternation—through the manipulation—of his original motion, offers us, as a source of comfort, the bicorporeal vision of him as he travels along the parabola of his fall from a residual sequence of a most personal and fatal leap.
