The short documentary looks at some innovative approaches to providing services and accommodation for battered women in rural, northern, and Native communities. Filmed in Thompson and Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, and West Bay Reserve, Ontario, the film introduces the women who operate and use various types of accommodation such as transition houses, transition apartments, and safe houses. The shelter on West Bay Reserve is singled out as a project that was built by women for women to stand as a reminder that the Reserve will not tolerate violence against women. A Safe Distance is part of the The Next Step, a 3-film series about the services needed by and available to battered women.

Googoosh, a popular and loved iranian-azerbaijani singer, performs a version of the song Ayrılıq – Separation. The performance is from 1970s television show and it has been copied several times from one videotape to another. Ayrılıq could be a love song but it is told that composer Ali Salimi (who at the age of 16 moved from Soviet Azerbaijan to Iran with his family and left many of his loved ones behind) wanted to make music about his sense of longing. I was searching for another song when I found this performance on YouTube. I could watch the video again and again and try to get a deeper understanding of it. I could use the performance as a mirror for the part in me that is of Iranian and Azeri origin. I could compare my sense of longing with the degraded video image and the lyrics of the song. And in my eyes the found video grew into a monument of distance – a presentation of disconnection, images, memory and mixed identification.

The film shows the whole background of the new reality that the world faced in the spring of 2020. Paradoxically, the most severe ordeal in the last 20 years has brought people together, while dividing them. Loneliness became a catalyst for internal changes for the six Russian-speaking characters of the film from different countries. Distanced from the usual life, for a month they filmed video diaries and learned to interact with the world in the new conditions of strict restrictions. Everything that is shown on the screen is pure improvisation, non-stop life, sincere feelings without censorship. The truthfulness of what is happening is emphasized by one of the most innovative technological formats — screenlife.

Distance, the anonymity of the architectural setup, decay, but also movement and interaction are subjects of a raw sketch that seeks to integrate a discussion about space and segregation into the discourse of the Common Good. The audio-visual language of the film uses a transparency and starkness of approach to reflect its subject matter. The fusion of architectural lines with sound through unexpected correspondences and synchronizations aims to generate a new kind of intermedial proposition.

Living in seclusion from the rest of the world, Daniel Bauer goes about his job as a gardener in the botanical gardens. A rather inconspicuous young man who, however, regularly breaks out of his motionless daily routine and commits indiscriminate acts of violence. When he gets to know Jana, a forlorn young woman, a tentative relationship develops between the two foreign bodies. She sees everything in the shy Daniel that she always wanted from a man. Yet she doesn't have any inkling of his dark side. After a first successful date between Daniel and Jana, the situation escalates. On the morning after the date, he shoots a jogger. This is a movie about the life and work of the Merited Worker of Arts of Russia, stage and film director Valery Akhadov. His professional life was a success, but his personal life was hardly easy. In the early 90-s at a highpoint in his career the director and his family had to leave Dushanbe together with his friends and colleagues from the Russian Drama Theatre. They all relocated to Magnitogorsk and began to work at the Pushkin Drama Theatre. 13 years later the VGIK graduate returned to the town of his youth and has been teaching young directors ever since. As usual he is full of creative ideas and plans.
