My youngest granduncle is the photographer in my extended family. On every special occasion, we always see him moving about with a camera. Switching from analogue to digital compact cameras, he documents the happiness and sorrow, life and death of family members. One day he asked me to make a ‘retrospective film’ to be played at his funeral. I took on this assignment and began a journey with him.

After his Tokyo farewell ceremony, Yamamoto's ashes were sent to Kyoto on March 9. Many friends and citizens gathered at his home in Uji. On the 15th a worker-farmer funeral was held at the Sanjo YMCA. Prokino's Kyoto Branch shot these five days of activities. The long line of cars is filled with taxis, whose drivers deeply admired Yamamoto. The Watanabe in the title refers to the head of the Communist Party of Japan. Watanabe was returning to Japan from Taiwan when he was stopped by authorities. He committed suicide in their custody. Yamamoto and Watanabe were mourned together.

Zhusheng's father suddenly died under the watchful eyes of the old dog. The dog witnessed the whole process of Luo's arrangement of his father's funeral. When Luo is embalming his father's body, outside in the forest comes a gunshot. As the forest ranger, Luo has to put down his father's body and patrol the forest. During the night, Luo sits alone on top of the hill, and he can't help crying bitterly. On their way home, Luo and the old dog rescue a lamb that has almost been eaten by a wolf. Luo takes the injured lamb home, give it herbal medicine, and the lamb gradually recovers. Luo continues to handle his father's funeral affairs in an orderly way. He digs the grave, prepares a hearth, makes dough figures, and the coffin. He follows the ancient rituals handed down from generation to generation in every process. At this moment, the dog, his companion, smells danger outside the door. The wolf is approaching…

Ambassador of the Russian Empire in Belgrade, Nicholas Hartwig (1857-1914), also known as an ardent Pan-Slavist and friend of Serbia, passed away unexpectedly in the Austro-Hungarian embassy, during his visit to the ambassador Baron Giesl von Gieslingen on the 27th June 1914. Over a hundred thousand citizens of Belgrade and Serbia attended his funeral on the 1st July 1914. Foreign diplomats exiting the building of the Russian mission can be seen in the film along with exiting of the Serbian Metropolitan Dimitrije and bishops from Niš and Šabac, as well as carrying of the casket with the deceased body out of the embassy building by the officers and clerks of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, headed by the President of the Serbian government and Hartwig's close friend Nikola Pašić.

The Second Lieutenant Zivojin Marinkovic from the XII Infantry Regiment “Car Lazar“ of the Sumadija Division of I age class in the formation of the III Army, died heroically of the Bulgarian grenade on Zedilovacka ridge on the 6th July 1913 during the battle on Kiselica. His burial on the 7th July 1913 in Kriva Palanka was recorded by the cameramen of the producer Djoka Bogdanovic, who filmed the bringing of the coffin into the church of Saint Demetrius, funeral service and burial on the local cemetery.

A bride walks on the desert. She takes off her bridal ornaments and turns into a harlot. A multitude of people crawl on their bellies, become sick and soon die. A volcano erupts. White ashes of lahar cover the earth. The bride remembers her betrothal and repents--symbolically paving the way for the resurrection of her people. A final bridal march into a new heaven and earth takes place.
