At the center of the action is Jimmy Mahoney (Richard Cassilly), a logger who stumbles onto the city of Mahagonny, where (almost) anything is allowed. Teresa Stratas gives a mesmerizing performance as Jenny, the prostitute who takes up with Jimmy, until he is executed for the greatest of all crimes in Mahagonny—to not have any money. The legendary Astrid Varnay, in her final Met appearances, is Leocadia Begbick, and Cornell MacNeil sings Trinity Moses.

A major work from the remarkable partnership of playwright and poet Bertolt Brecht and composer Kurt Weill, Mahagonny was first performed in Leipzig in 1930. Its first ever Royal Opera staging, by Associate Director of Opera John Fulljames, is sung in English, and conducted by Mark Wigglesworth – recently announced as the successor to Edward Gardner as Music Director of English National Opera. Mahagonny is a satire on money, morality and pleasure-seeking among the dubious citizens of a fictional city. The richly varied, jazz-infused score, influenced by ragtime music, includes such irresistible melodies as the ‘Alabama Song’ and many dramatic ensembles. The superb cast includes Kurt Streit as the wild lumberjack Jimmy, Christine Rice as his sweetheart Jenny, Anne Sofie von Otter in a welcome return to The Royal Opera as the cunning Leokadja Begbick, and Peter Hoare and Willard W. White as her helpers and fellow-fugitives Fatty and Moses.

A hard-hitting new production of Kurt Weill’s Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny by the Catalan collective La Fura dels Baus at the Teatro Real de Madrid. Composed in the 1930s by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, this is a mordant satire on capitalism and the inexorable industrialisation of a society in which the ultimate crime is not having money. In twenty scenes the authors tell the story of a city lost in the middle of a desert and run by three thugs; in Mahagonny food, sex, gambling and violence rule supreme.

Images of the interior and exterior of the city hall in Ahlen (NRW, Germany) in its present state and in absence of people. Due to the lack of maintenance and altered ideas about design in public space, the city hall – once a showpiece – is no longer beloved and is threatened by demolition. The film ends with a number of slides that were made by the architect during the opening in 1974: visitors gaze with admiration at an unknown modernity.

Racer Lin Chuang admired his rival Liang Zi, a pungent and hearty beauty, and followed her in the desert off-road race. At night on the track, the supply station where everyone rested was attacked by a mysterious monster at night. After Lin Chuang and his companions escaped by chance, they determined to retrieve Liang Zi who had driven away alone. A group of people chased to an abandoned factory nearby and found that the wealthy businessman Xiong Kun and his men were exploring rare minerals here. The two forces gathered in the desert forbidden area and started a death expedition. The frenzied attack by unidentified creatures officially kicked off. The two teams suffered heavy casualties and were trapped in the factory. Finally, it was discovered that the giant monster that revealed its true face under the dust was the sand python that failed to be transformed by the underground laboratory.

A camera starts on a sloppy scene: people walking around, a building that's seen better days, palm trees, with fronds waving in the breeze. As the camera pans to the left, the busy people continue, but the audience sees the devastation left by the San Francisco Earthquake.

Casey enters a subway station nearby City Hall and walks down the tunnel. He lights a fuse to set off a blast and runs away. Thinking the fuse has gone out, he creeps cautiously up to it, when it suddenly goes off, Casey is blown through the tunnel, all the way to Harlem.

The hotel overlooks the city hall. The city hotel returns the glance. Glances bounce off each other, become directions and points headed towards, together, and outwards all just one frame apart in between the hotel and city hall.
