Louis Calhern, nascut Carl Henry Vogt (Brooklyn, Nova York, 19 de febrer de 1895 - Nara, Japó, 12 de maig de 1956), va ser un actor estatunidenc. La seva família va deixar Nova York sent ell un nen, i es va traslladar a Saint Louis (Missouri), on es va educar. Mentre practicava esport a l'escola, un director teatral d'una companyia en gira es va fixar en ell, i el va contractar com a extra. Carl Henry Vogt (February 19, 1895 – May 12, 1956), known professionally as Louis Calhern, was an American stage and screen actor. For portraying Oliver Wendell Holmes in the film The Magnificent Yankee (1950), he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. Calhern began working in silent films for director Lois Weber in the early 1920s; the most notable being The Blot in 1921. A 1921 newspaper article commented, "The new arrival in stardom is Louis Calhern, who, until Miss Weber engaged him to enact the leading male role in What's Worth While?, had been playing leads in the Morosco Stock company of Los Angeles."

In 1923 Calhern left the movies, but would return to the screen eight years later after the advent of sound pictures. He was primarily cast as a character actor in films while he continued to play leading roles on the stage. He reached his peak in the 1950s as a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer contract player. Among his many memorable screen roles were Ambassador Trentino in the Marx Brothers classic Duck Soup (1933) and three that he appeared in at MGM in 1950: a singing role as Buffalo Bill in the film version of the musical Annie Get Your Gun, the double-crossing lawyer and sugar-daddy to Marilyn Monroe in John Huston's film noir The Asphalt Jungle, and his Oscar-nominated performance as Oliver Wendell Holmes in The Magnificent Yankee (re-creating his role from the Broadway stage). He was also praised for his portrayal of the title role in the John Houseman production of Julius Caesar (adapted from the Shakespeare play) in 1953, directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz. Calhern also played the role of the devious George Caswell, the manipulative board member of Tredway Corporation in the 1954 production of Executive Suite.

Calhern's other film roles included the grandfather in The Red Pony (1949), adapted from the novel by John Steinbeck and starring Robert Mitchum, and the spy boss of Cary Grant in the Alfred Hitchcock suspense classic Notorious (1946). A performance as Uncle Willie in High Society (1956), a musical remake of The Philadelphia Story, turned out to be his final film.

Sein Spielfilmdebüt gab der hochgewachsene Mime mit der distinguierten Stimme bereits 1921 und spielte seither in einigen Stummfilmen vorwiegend Bonvivants und Edelgangster. Mit Aufkommen des Tonfilms konnte er seine Karriere nahtlos fortsetzen und zeigte in seinen Rollen eine große Bandbreite zwischen aristokratischen, väterlichen, gefühlskalten, tragischen und komödiantischen Charakteren. Er spielte ebenso in Komödien der Marx Brothers (als Botschafter Trentino von Sylvanien in Die Marx Brothers im Krieg, 1933) und des in den 30er-Jahren äußerst populären Komiker-Duo Robert Woolsey und Bert Wheeler (Diplomaniacs, ebenfalls 1933) sowie als etwas steifer Vater von Don Ameche in Ernst Lubitschs tiefgründigem Ein himmlischer Sünder (1943), in Krimis wie 20000 Jahre in Sing Sing (1932) neben Spencer Tracy und Bette Davis, in Literaturverfilmungen wie als gewissenloser Staatsanwalt Villefort neben Robert Donat in Alexandre Dumas’ Graf von Monte Christo (1934), in Historiendramen wie Die letzten Tage von Pompeji (1935), in Thrillern wie Hitchcocks Spionage-Drama Berüchtigt (1946) und in Dramen wie neben Ingrid Bergman in Im Schatten des Triumphbogens (1948).

Ab 1950 erlebte er in Produktionen der MGM-Studios seinen späten Karrierehöhepunkt. 1950 spielte er neben seiner mit einer Oscar-Nominierung prämierten Rolle als Oliver Wendell Holmes den alternden Buffalo Bill in der Filmversion des Musicals Annie Get Your Gun sowie Marilyn Monroes väterlichen Freund und zugleich Kopf einer Bande von Kriminellen in John Hustons Asphalt Dschungel. Zwei Jahre später spielte er in der romantischen Komödie Wir sind gar nicht verheiratet ein weiteres Mal an der Seite von Marilyn Monroe. Es folgten Rollen in den Abenteuerfilmen Im Schatten der Krone neben Stewart Granger (1952) und als Baal-Priester neben Lana Turner Tempel der Versuchung (1955), die Titelrolle in Joseph L. Mankiewicz' Julius Caesar (mit Marlon Brando als Marc Anton), neben Clark Gable im Kriegsdrama Verraten (1954), als zynischer Lehrer in Drama Die Saat der Gewalt (1955) sowie in den Musicals Symphonie des Herzens (1954, mit Elizabeth Taylor) und Die oberen Zehntausend (als Onkel von Grace Kelly).

Im Jahr 1956 befand er sich für Dreharbeiten zu der Kriegssatire Das kleine Teehaus nach Vern Sneider mit Glenn Ford und Marlon Brando in Japan. Dort starb Calhern, der lange Jahre unter Alkoholproblemen litt, am 12. Mai 1956 an Herzversagen. Die Grabrede hielt der Star der Produktion, Glenn Ford, mit dem er bereits in Saat der Gewalt zusammen gespielt hatte. Calherns Part als Oberst Wainwright Purdy III. übernahm Paul Ford.
