Richard John Parfitt, OBE (12 October 1948 – 24 December 2016) was an English musician, best known as a rhythm guitarist, singer and songwriter with rock band Status Quo.

Parfitt began his career in the early 1960s, playing in pubs and holiday camps. He joined Status Quo in 1967 when they were looking for an additional singer. He wrote songs for the band and remained with them for 49 years. He occasionally guested with other bands, and recorded an unreleased solo album in 1985. In 2016, Parfitt temporarily retired from touring with the band due to ill health, and died in December of that year. His only solo album, Over and Out, was released posthumously in 2018.

Richard John Parfitt was born in Woking, Surrey, on 12 October 1948. His father Richard was an insurance salesman "who was a drinker and a gambler", and his mother Lillian worked in cake shops. He described his upbringing as "wonderful", and described his childhood-self as a "typical naughty boy". He first started to learn to play the guitar at the age of 11.

In 1963 Parfitt was playing guitar and singing in The Prince of Wales Feathers, a pub on Warren Street in Camden, London, when his father was approached by an agent from Sunshine Holiday Camp on Hayling Island, who gave Parfitt a performing job. At the camp Parfitt joined Jean and Gloria Harrison – performing as the double act The Harrison Twins – to form a cabaret trio called The Highlights. Following the season, the Harrison Twins' manager Joe Cohen – who had been one of the Keystone Cops – arranged for The Highlights to perform at Butlins in Minehead. Here, Parfitt met future Status Quo partner Francis Rossi, who was playing with Alan Lancaster and John Coghlan in a band called The Spectres (soon to be renamed Traffic Jam) – a forerunner to Status Quo. "I remember wandering over there one afternoon for the first time and watching them rehearse," Parfitt recalled. "I may still have been in my silver lamé suit, which I used to wear all the time. They were playing [Chuck Berry's] 'Bye Bye Johnny' and it sounded absolutely fantastic."

After Parfitt befriended the band, their manager Pat Barlow invited him to join, as they needed another singer.

In 1967, Traffic Jam changed their name to The Status Quo (they soon dropped the definite article and later still would often be known simply as 'Quo'), beginning Parfitt's almost 50-year career in the band. Early successes came with the Rossi-penned hit "Pictures of Matchstick Men". The single became the group's only Top 40 hit in the United States, peaking at number twelve on the Billboard Hot 100. Though the follow-up was the unsuccessful single, "Black Veils of Melancholy", they had a hit again the same year with a Marty Wilde and Ronnie Scott song, "Ice in the Sun", which climbed to number eight. The band's 1972 album Piledriver, which reached number 5, spent a total of 37 weeks on the UK Albums Chart. ...

Richard John Parfitt, dit Rick Parfitt, né le 12 octobre 1948 à Woking (Surrey) et mort le 24 décembre 2016 à Marbella (Andalousie) en Espagne, est, de 1965 à 2016, l'un des deux guitaristes/chanteurs du groupe anglais Status Quo.

En 1965, Rick Parfitt joue avec son groupe, The Highlights, au camp de vacances d'été Butlin's à Minehead. C'est là qu'il rencontre Francis Rossi qui joue avec son propre groupe The Spectres. Les deux musiciens deviennent amis et décident de travailler ensemble à l'avenir.

En 1967, alors que The Spectres, après avoir changé leur nom en Traffic Jam puis en Status Quo, vont d'échec en échec, Rick Parfitt, qui vient de quitter son groupe, reçoit un coup de fil de Pat Barlow, le manager, pour rejoindre Status Quo et participer à l'enregistrement de Pictures of Matchstick Men. Il en deviend le guitariste rythmique, chanteur et compositeur.

Depuis, Rick Parfitt a enregistré avec Status Quo près de 30 albums studio et fait plusieurs fois le tour du monde lors des tournées. Il reste avec Francis Rossi le seul membre du groupe à avoir participé à tous les albums.

En 1991, son double en cire ainsi que celui de Francis Rossi sont réalisés pour le musée de cire de Madame Tussauds à Londres.

En 2006, Rick Parfitt lance avec son partenaire, Mike Hrano, un procédé pour transformer l'aspect des guitares appelé Guitar Facelift, The Original.

Le 15 septembre 2016, il annonce qu'il quitte définitivement le groupe, victime d'une nouvelle attaque cardiaque après un concert en Turquie au mois de juin de la même année. Le groupe finit malgré tout la tournée qui était annoncée comme étant la dernière tournée électrique.

Rick Parfitt meurt le 24 décembre 2016 dans un hôpital de Marbella, dans le sud de l'Espagne, à la suite d'une complication liée à une blessure à l'épaule.

Rick Parfitt joue essentiellement sur sa Fender Telecaster blanche de 1965, mais il en possède plusieurs autres de couleurs différentes. Il joue aussi sur une Gibson SG, une Zeimaitis de 1981, une Viper ovation qu'il utilise plus jeune pour les morceaux en open G, une Fender Esquire et une Chet Atkins pour les parties acoustiques. Pour l'amplification, il utilise des amplis Marshall JCM800 et JCM900 combinés à un ampli Vox AC30. Pour les effets, il utilise un processeur Roland GP8.

Rick Parfitt est marié trois fois: avec Marietta qui lui donne un fils, Richard (né en 1978), puis avec Patty qui lui donne un deuxième fils, Harry (né en 1989), et enfin depuis août 2006 avec Lindsay qui lui donne, le 26 mai 2008, les jumeaux Tommy Oswald et Lily Rose. Rick a également eu une fille Heidi qui est décédée en août 1980 à l'âge de 5 ans noyée dans la piscine familiale.

En 1997, à 49 ans, il est opéré d'un quadruple pontage coronarien à la suite d'une première crise cardiaque causée par divers excès (alcool, cocaïne…). Il subira deux nouvelles attaques cardiaques en 2011 et 2014, puis une dernière en 2016, qui le contraindra à mettre fin à ses tournées.

En 2010, Rick Parfitt est nommé officier de l'ordre de l'Empire britannique (OBE) pour services rendus à la musique et aux œuvres de charité.
