Patrick Pierre Hernandez (born 6 April 1949) is a French singer who had a worldwide hit with "Born to Be Alive" in 1979.

Born to a Spanish father and an Italian mother in Le Blanc-Mesnil, Seine-Saint-Denis, Hernandez grew up in the 1960s and was interested in music. He toured dancehalls and ballrooms in southern France with a number of groups over the next decade. Hernández met his music partner Hervé Tholance, an arranger, guitarist, and vocalist, during that period. The two formed a duo and achieved local success backing French musicians such as Francis Cabrel, Laurent Voulzy, and the French group Gold.

In 1978, Hernandez met the producer Jean Vanloo with disco music at its peak, and signed a recording contract. Hernández went to Waterloo, Belgium to work on songs.

After working for about a year, the songs were released on the Aariana sub-label Aquarius Records (in France) in November 1978. The first single that was released was the disco song "Born to Be Alive". Its success was immediate, and in January 1979, Hernandez received his first gold record from Italy. The song spread throughout Europe, where it hit #1 in France in April and remained there until July. By then, the United States had caught on, and after some remixing, the record was signed to the A-Tom-Mik label and later Columbia Records. The remixed version was released on a commercial 12" single; it peaked on the US Billboard disco chart at #1 and crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100 peaking at #16. It sold over one million copies in the US. The track reached #10 in the UK Singles Chart. By year's end, Hernandez had racked up 52 gold and platinum records from more than 50 countries.

While Hernandez was touring the United States, he was accompanied by Vanloo and his friend Jean-Claude Pellerin. Vanloo and Pellerin held auditions in New York that spring for dancers to accompany Hernández on his worldwide tour. The chosen dancers included a young Madonna.

Hernandez's follow-ups to "Born to Be Alive" did not fare as well in the US. "Disco Queen" backed with "Show Me the Way You Kiss" sold poorly, but the album Born to Be Alive sold well and won him a Billboard Award in February 1980. As a result of this lack of subsequent success he has earned the title of "One Hit Wonder."

In 1981, Hernandez released the import 12" single of "Goodbye", first released on Aariana Records and then a remixed version on the parent-label Aquarius Records (in France). It was not released in the US, although an album followed the single's release, but found no market in the US.

Patrick Hernandez est né le 6 avril 1949 au Blanc-Mesnil (désormais en Seine-Saint-Denis), d'un père préparateur en pharmacie d'origine espagnole, et d'une mère comptable d'origine italienne. Il grandit à Savennières, une commune proche d'Angers, et passe la fin de son adolescence avec sa mère à Goussainville (Val-d'Oise) où il fréquente le collège Pierre-Curie. «C’est là que j’ai commencé à faire de la musique de manière professionnelle. Les hasards de la vie m’ont amené dans le Périgord. J’avais 19 ans et je débutais en jouant dans des bals, à Périgueux ou à Limoges.» Il vit quelque temps à Noyon dans l'Oise vers les années 1970/1980. Patrick Hernandez fait ses premières incursions dans le monde de la musique en intégrant différents groupes, avec lesquels il sort de premiers 45 tours qui ne connaissent pas le succès, dont la première version de Back to the boogie, repris quelques années plus tard sur son premier 33 tours avec Hervé Tholance. Produit par Jean-Claude Pellerin et Jean Van Loo, c'est le groupe Paris Palace Hotel, dit P.P.H., fondé par Patrick Margueron et qui compte déjà parmi ses membres Hervé Tholance qui, après une maquette faite au Studio D.E.S. à Bruxelles, enregistre en 1975 au studio 92, un album de quatorze chansons dont une version rock de Born to Be Alive, une ballade initialement, composée depuis quelques années. Mais l'album ne sort pas et le groupe se dissout fin des années 1970 (1978-79).

Découragé, Patrick Hernandez songe à arrêter la musique et, après une rupture amoureuse, part élever des veaux dans le Périgord en 1977-1978. Il joue dans un orchestre, l'orchestre de Martin Transit, sous le pseudonyme de Pat Harrison. Il revient chanter son tube de nombreuses fois en Dordogne, à Thiviers, Excideuil, Périgueux ou encore Tourtoirac, où il est accompagné par un groupe local dans lequel joue notamment Michel Basler, un grand batteur bien connu dans le Sud-Ouest, et où chante Jacky Cardona, ex-ingénieur du son et choriste de Mike Brant.

Patrick Hernandez modifie ses projets quand le producteur Jean Van Loo, sponsorisé par Marcel De Keukeleire, directeur des Éditions Elver, lui demande de le rejoindre à Mouscron, en Belgique, pour travailler ensemble. Grâce à lui, il enregistre à nouveau au Studio D.E.S, dans un arrangement de Guy Delo, supervisé par Jack Say, propriétaire du Studio, le titre Born to Be Alive, dans un style disco. «À l'époque, le terme disco était pour moi un gros mot. J'avais 30 ans et j'étais rock», explique-t-il pourtant. Il accepte de se prêter à cette nouvelle version, par nécessité plus que par goût. Cet enregistrement est ensuite remixé dans différents studios, et c'est finalement la version mixée au Studio Kathy, à Ohain (Belgique), qui sera mise sur le marché. Le disque rencontre d'abord le succès en Italie en 1978, où il est certifié disque d'or, avant d'être édité par CBS France l'année suivante. ...
