Biography

Gregg Barbanell grew up in San Francisco, California where he became involved in theater while attending Washington High School. After graduating, he was accepted into the School of Theater at California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. After only a year in theater, Gregg reapplied to CalArts for a spot in the School of Film. He was accepted based on a screenplay he wrote and was placed in the elite directing program. Gregg was fortunate to be hand picked for the program and mentored by Alexander Mackendrick. In1977, Gregg graduated from CalArts with a BFA in film. After graduating, Gregg found work as an assistant sound editor and within a year, was working as a supervising sound editor. Two years after graduating, Gregg started a sound editing company called Mag City, Inc. where he attracted clients such as Peter Bogdanovich for "Saint Jack" (1979), John Carpenter for "The Fog" (1980), Francis Ford Coppola for "The Escape Artist" (1982) and many others. It was during the seven years as a supervising sound editor at Mag City that Gregg discovered and developed his natural ability on the Foley stage. After he sold Mag City, he stopped being a sound editor and worked exclusively as a Foley Artist, which he has been doing ever since. His dedication to his craft, sterling reputation, excellent work ethic and non-stop employment for 35 plus years has resulted in the prolific list of credits.
