Whyd they put the offering food next to a cliff

Why didnt they just put it in the middle of the open field instead of having it elevated on rocks overlooking a cliff with a pond below it.

My guess is that there just happened to be a rock formation that the ants thought would be the ideal place to put the food. While I do think that Flik should've been a little more careful, I have to agree that was a pretty dumb decision to have been made in the first place, and I couldn't believe that they still kept the food on top of those rocks after that accident.
