Discuss Beverly Hills Cop

It's said to have created the genre and the funny thing is, I don't think anything ever surpassed it.

Starting with the very real footage of Detroits people being filmed without their knowlege (permission obtained afterwards) we have a almost historian feel to the opening. Then the soundtrack mixes soul music with 80s electronic, which was also grond breaking (one of the few instrumental songs to chart).

What's great about this movie is that it created the world of Beverly Hills as being completely separate to Los Ángeles city. We get no shots of the usual skyline or Hollywood sign. It really did make Beverly Hills feel like it's own world.

Eddie was top of his game and unlike in later years when he'd overact the whacky for a laugh, his serious delivery of jokes seemed to hit the mark every time.

Along with capturing the poverty of Detroit, it seemed to capture the opulence of the 80s as well. The sleek black Mercedes Benz of Víctor Maitland exudes the era of excess. Wealth and status was not looked down upon but dreamt about.

Finally I'll add that the story is essentially a "fish out of water" tale, and these stories are always engaging.

i like it too.

Definitely the seminal film in the genre...

After reading your post I had to watch it again. Still as funny as ever grin

Lol glad i could inspire a viewing

Do you also like the 2nd and 3rd?

I like II because it had a great plot, albeit less comedy. III was just a mess to me. I was like "meh" when I saw it in 94 and it was barely watchable when on tv last year. One and two were 80s movies with great villains. This was 90s and set in an amusement park. Plus Taggart wasn't in it so it was missing the straight man for Billy's youthful mishaps.

The best part of II is how much Billy changed. You could really see how Axel's presence influenced him. And Taggart was a little more laid back as well.

One of my favorite action-comedies from the great 80's. :D
