Setting aside controversies around this film, I have to salute the effects. Maybe I am a gullible idiot, but the effects and sets in the first 30mins or so really fooled me with their apparent 'realism'. I'm not sure I've seen better (although I tend not to watch disaster films). I'm surprised the effects weren't even nominated for an oscar. Eventual winner in 2013 Life of Pi didnt turn my head at all for visual effects.
Still, I found The Impossible a bit questionable over all, so I wont shed too many tears on its behalf.
5/10

I give this movie an 8 out of 10 rating and consider it well done overall, particularly regarding the incredible special effects and Naomi Watts' excellent performance.
I completely agree with you, that how the special effects weren't Oscar nominated is perplexing. At least Watts was deservedly nominated in the Lead Actress category.
