Discuss Coach Carter

As a former teacher, I could relate to the frustration of him wanting those kids to do more than just the status quo, while working for a principal who only is concerned about money. She was basically giving up on them, saying that graduating was a long shot for the boys, and all they could hope to do is be a jock on the team for 4 years.

I wish there were more films like this, where we see positivity and mentoring for young men.

Would it also be fair to say that, uninspirational as the principal's sentiments regarding the likely fate of these boys might be, she's also demonstrating a great deal of foresight? Never having been a teacher, my "knowledge" of this subject comes almost exclusively from what I've read, nonetheless it doesn't seem likely that. by time high school rolls around, teachers and staff can have much influence of folks who've never seen the importance of learning modeled in their home life and surrounding environment after 15-17 years on the planet. That's an immense amount of dysfunctional programming to remedy. especially in an eight hour school day that lasts Mon-Fri.

Maybe it is an immense amount to remedy, but I think it would be worth it to possibly better even a few of the students' lives or outlook on what they could be. I have had students who had no interest in learning anything, didn't care about their futures much etc., but at the same time, there were few who I know I was able to inspire and touch them in a way that a parent may have not had the ability to. Not saying they are guaranteed to be successful, but at the very least, they understand there are people who care enough to encourage them to be more than they figured they could.

There's substance to that sentiment, I admit. Mary Kay Leternoueu didn't hesitate to touch Villi in an infinite number of ways, ways that his mother would have never even imagined, much less acted upon. The lad's subsequently gone on to have three achingly gorgeous daughters and a marriage that boasts more longevity than those that began without the benefit of pedophilia
