Discuss The Man with the Golden Gun

I recently rewatched all of Sir Roger's efforts and had in mind The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker and Octopussy as his crowning glories. However, I think I was perhaps unfairly elevating Octopussy just above this as I was so pleased to see it match the tone of those other two following For Your Eyes Only.

In truth though I think this is a slightly better film overall, even with the slightly inferior tone of his first couple of outings. Therefore I'd go:-

  1. Moonraker
  2. The Spy Who Loved Me
  3. The Man With The Golden Gun
  4. Octopussy
  5. Live and Let Die
  6. A View To A Kill
  7. For Your Eyes Only

How do other Sir Roger fans rate his entries?

It's a fantastic era actually. Such entertaining films - funny, fantastical, but still elegant, and often surreal. In order of how much I like them (not necessarily how good they are as films)...

Moonraker
A View To A Kill (best Bond villain)
For Your Eyes Only
Live and Let Die
The Man With The Golden Gun
Octopussy
The Spy Who Loved Me

The Spy Who Loved Me

For Your Eyes Only

Live And Let Die

The Man With The Golden Gun

A View To A Kill

Moonraker

Octopussy (The only Bond film I truly dislike)

Just wondering if there was any particular reasoning behind this?

Although I wouldn't have gone as far as to say I disliked it, prior to my recent rewatching I'd probably have placed it near the bottom too just going off my memory.

Was never a huge fan of the clown circus tent ending...

I felt that Roger Moore was starting to feel like a Bond parody at this point. I generally love the Moore era Bond flicks but Octopussy never worked for me because of that. I also didn't like Louis Jourdan as Kamal. He was a boring villian.

I'll try to give it another watch. It's been a good five years since I've seen it. Maybe like you I'll end up appreciating it a bit more.

I think THE SPY WHO LOVED ME is, by far, Roger's best Bond pic.

That's a pretty spot-on assessment. I dunno what to make of the Timothy Dalton ones. Living Daylights was traditional enough, then Licence to Kill was R-rated and violent (by Bond standards). Dalton and Moore are so hard to compare

I've never been a big Roger Moore fan, but some of his Bond movies were quite entertaining. My rankings:

1)The Spy Who Loved Me

2)For Your Eyes Only

3)Octopussy

4)Moonraker

5)A View To A Kill

6)Live And Let Die

7) The Man With The Golden Gun
