Generally not a fan of animation, but it's been a slow month for movies so figured why not. Didn't know anything about this movie or feature before seeing it and was expecting it to be your standard run of the mill PG13 adaptation of Mortal Kombat where the only time you see blood is when somebody gets a busted up lip. Let's just say that this movie captured the essence of Mortal Kombat better than any of the movies or TV series or just about anything except the games. Was pretty much all smiles watching this after the first action scene and let's just say that first scene already manages to blow away any fears of this being anything resembling PG13 and it only manages to get better after that and it nicely incorporates the fatalities etc. and even the xray feature from the more modern games.

Eh, I didn’t like it. I felt like it was basically a rehash of the original storyline from the MK movie (1995). That’s not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, but I thought the entire movie would center around Scorpion, since his name is a part of the title. It kinda veers off into another direction in the middle, and left me feeling bored.
Yes, there is gore, but some of it seems just done for shock value and has no real substance or point to the plot in many ways. I can’t count how many times they show the spear going through people’s heads. It got a little old for me, and I’ve been playing the MK games since their inception.
I didn’t like how they portrayed Sonya, Cage or even favorites of mine like Kitana and Baraka. They made Cage seem like a cuck, who was a beta male clown, very much the antithesis of what he’s been in the series - an arrogant, cocky fighter with silly one liners. Sonya was way too overpowered and portrayed as some kind of badass who on multiple occasions gives Cage unwarranted low blows....why? Aren’t they supposed to be on the same “team” for lack of a better term? He just goes along with her emasculating him? Okay, how are we as the audience to see her as a protagonist?
Literally everything I wanted from a modern MK film, I got in the 2021 live action version. I watched this afterwards at the suggestion of a friend who saw the recent MK film with me. I gotta say I was unimpressed with this.
