Discuss Battleship Potemkin

Ah, an era I'm avidly a fan of! It's very difficult for me to narrow down to just ten favourite Silent films, since I'm similarly crazy about an array of movies of back then. But working just from titles represented in my personal collection, and being brutal with the cuts, I'll go with the following (listed chronologically by years) as my top ten:

  • The Dying Swan (1917)
  • The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921)
  • The Phantom Carriage (1921)
  • Scaramouche (1923)
  • Beau Brummel (1924)
  • The Hands of Orlac (1924)
  • Battleship Potemkin (1925)
  • Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1925)
  • Flesh and the Devil (1926)
  • The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)

Several other terrific favourites (pretty much all which I like every bit as much as my top ten above) in the collection:

  • The White Sister (1923)
  • The Circle (1925)
  • The Phantom of the Opera (1925)
  • Exit Smiling (1926)
  • The General (1926)
  • Captain Salvation (1927)
  • The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927)
  • Love (1927)
  • Metropolis (1927)
  • The Show (1927)
  • Wings (1927)
  • Across to Singapore (1928)
  • Laugh, Clown, Laugh (1928)
  • The Mysterious Lady (1928)

  1. Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927)
  2. The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)
  3. The General (1926)
  4. Metropolis (1925)
  5. The Thief of Bagdad (1924)
  6. Faust (1926)
  7. The Wind (1928)
  8. Wings (1927)
  9. The Lost World (1925)
  10. Nosferatu (1922)

I wish The Wind would be released on DVD (Region 1), as I've been very much wanting a physical copy of that for years.

I haven't seen nearly enough silent films to do a top ten list. Films I liked that nobody mentioned so far:

Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1919/1920)

The Golem (1920?)

Plus basically everything by Charlie Chaplin. I especially liked City Lights and Modern Times, but those technically don't count because they were made after 1930.

countz, I love Chaplin's The Kid (1921).
