Just watched this for the first time in years and got to say - not as impressive as I had in mind.
For sure the storyline still more than stands up, it's classic sci-fi, but stylistically, I guess what I once would have thought was pretty cool now seems a bit embarrassing - the black leather gear, trench coats, shades, and the never ending super slo-mo... Not really the best.

I just rewatched all 3 films again. Fantastic viewing. There were the remastered versions which looked and sounded great.

I think The Matrix still holds up 20 years later thanks largely to its story and the hero's journey the main character goes on. I think it's ironic Fight Club came out the same year and both films are about main characters who need to wake up from their fake lives and change the world.

The sequels were junk especially the third one. I remember I had to go back to the theater to watch it again because I fell asleep the first time around and I wanted to know the conclusion of the story. That's a pretty good business ploy, actually. Always make the final chapter in a film trilogy incredibly boring so that people fall asleep and have to buy another ticket.
The second actually grew on me as I HATED it when I first saw it. It was just such a downer compared to the brilliance of the first. Also the fact that it was released 3 months before the final installment (very close to each other) so I may have been conflating the two but after watching again over the years I do not think it is THAT bad. It does have it's moments.
The Matrix Reloaded (2003) - 7 outta 10 stars
The Matrix Revolutions (2003) - 4 outta 10 stars

I can look at a movie from the past and travel back there for a while. What's wrong with being dated anyways. Look at some super CGI fest from today and I don't feel like I'm anywhere. Still most movies don't bear repeated viewing even some classics.
For an opposing view... https://www.vice.com/amp/en_au/article/7b7kje/the-matrix-is-dated-and-embarrassing

I tend to agree with the article the music, clothes,CGI and themes make it feel dated it may have been a good movie for the zeitgeist of the late 90's but watching it recently it did feel dated. The fact they made two sequels didn't improve it's legacy either.A standalone movie would have kept part of it's mystery.
