Discuss Hustlers

This movie barely touched on the horrors of being a stripper. It made stripping look like it was a fun sexy job, when the reality is that strippers go through terrible things "just to entertain their clients." Most women who have worked in strip clubs will tell you that they're not just taken advantaged of, but they're also sexually, verbally, and physically assaulted by their customers. Apparently, these things happen on a day-to-day basis. They also say that's it's rare to see strippers form friendships. In fact, strippers are actually quite vicious to one another. The conditions are so bad that these women have to turn to drug and alcohol abuse, just to be able to handle their jobs.

I understand if someone disagrees with me. I'm not saying the women in this film had it easy. My problem is that J-Lo, and everyone else involved in this movie, has tried to pass this off as being "female empowerment." I think this is the wrong message to young girls. This lifestyle the shouldn't be praised.

You know, I've had strippers gfs and ex-strippers gfs, and they've never made their job as horrible as people who are against stripping make it out to be. I've heard worse horror stories from people who worked retail. I used to work in a convenience store, and I've been shot at, had a knife to my throat, assaulted with thrown can food, and verbally abused by customers on a daily basis. Maybe they shouldn't glorify convenience store workers in movies either! Hear that Kevin Smith!

Jesus Christ! Where do you meet these women? Eharmony wasn't doing it for you?

I met them in college or through friends and family. They're just normal girls, doing what they can to get by in life, and not have to try to survive on minimum wage pay (and treated worse by their customers and employers).

Like Innovator, I've befriended a few strippers and even a porn borderline-star once...all I know is we were similar in age and she drove a MUCH nicer car then me, and seldom complained. My understanding is they were able to separate their mentality & emotions from the various men (and sometimes women) that grab on 'em all day..it was a job and it paid well..VERY well. Most I knew were in nursing school and such, taking advantage of their youth and what God gave 'em til its time to get out there in the real world!

As for this film, I cannot STAND J.Lo and heard she's campaigning for an Oscar! >gag< Can anyone chime in if its an Oscar worthy performance?! Last time she campaigned (then promptly yelled "foul" and "racist" when not nominated) was for El Cantante...which she turned in a s***ty performance anyway (a Hector Lavoe singer biopic that was NOT her's to steal).

Holly word glorified sex

Come on, what girl doesn't dream of growing up having to gyrate (and worse) for ageing, out of shape desperados?

I've no intention of seeing the film but the other aspect is that sex workers trying to 'make ends meet' will be so far from the glamorous movie star looks that it isn't real. There is a reason why prostitution websites routinely show false photos.

Maybe the film shows clients as overwhelmingly repellant, hygiene as being an after thought and working class sex workers as incredibly average women (at best) both physically and mentally. That'd maybe be a film worth with something to say, rather than flannel.

I don't know if you've ever been in a strip club, but strippers can get very good looking. One my exes (who was an ex-stripper), my friends rated as an 11.

The director has said that the movie isn't about female empowerment but about a group of women that made bad decisions given their circumstances.

JLo looking scrumptious in a g-string, being just as nimble around the pole at age 50 was this one's only redeeming quality

Did you see the movie? Oscar worthy? I swear I think J.Lo thinks looking good at 50 and twirling around makes her Oscar worthy..gimme a break!

Next thing you know Marvel fans will be campaigning for Robert Downy Jr to be nominated for EndGame...oh wait...

Couldn't resist the Marvel dig, could ya? Don't worry RDJ "honourably" turned down the nomination out of possibly not wanting to be nominated for a comic book movie, so don't worry, your pretentious awards cam keep the trophies firmly lodged up their ass.

RDJ vs Joaquin Phoenix for the award?! RDJ'd have to be smokin' some serious herb to even think that's even a contest! (oh, and Joker is a loose comic book movie too...doh!)

Oh you're one of those Barney the dinosaur birthday party tots wowed by Joaquin's clown mannerisms, that's cute, where's your dummy? RDJ is an actor, Joaquin is the Phoenix brother no one likes.

RDJ is a great actor, but a LUCKY BASTARD Jon Favreau took a chance on an ex drug addict that FIRED from Ally McBeal (of all shows)...quit acting like he's the epitome of actors...he's NOT!

Quit inflating the ego of a glorified mime artist like Joaquin Phoenix then I'll listen you about RDJ. Deal?

Joaquin is HARDLY my favorite actor..in fact, only seen him in 'Gladiator' and 'Her' and a handful of others (not many) before...but DAMN if he wasn't REALLY CONVINCING and almost SCARY as 'Joker'...he engrossed himself in the role. Can't say the same for RDJ as Iron Man (its cocky RDJ being...cocky RDJ..lol). He showed more acting range in Tropic Thunder (seriously..he stole that movie considering the cast!)

I met this one stripper who was 21, very sweet, and really good looking. But she also had a screwed up view of men that she got from the women who raised her. And she had a bad alcohol addiction, blacked out often with no memory of the night before, and several DUIs. She also had trouble keeping a steady place to live. Three years later I ran into her again and her situation had not improved. Her life was far from OK.

That isn't to say that all women who go into sex work have problems like hers but from what I hear it's fairly common.

The problem I have with movies like this is that it glorifies the maltreatment of men by women. They drugged and robbed men and then threatened them with exposure when the men begged for their money back. These women should have seen way longer prison sentences for that.

I agree.
