This woman killed seven men in cold blood - for money. I felt no sympathy for her whatsoever. Many people have bad - even appalling - childhoods, they don't make that their excuse to harm others. Whenever a murderer is convicted, the hunt is on to find any and every excuse to justify their actions - there is no excuse -when you cut out the psychobabble, some people are simply evil. I found the acting of Charlize Theron very overstated in this movie - and Tyria Moore must have been thrilled to have Christina Ricci play her character In the movie as she bears no resemblance to her.

Expect any different from the lefties who predominate in film production?

I see them as reasons and explanations rather than excuses. Also, no one is "simply" evil. All of our actions, even evil ones, have some cause, and investigating those causes is inherently interesting. I'd say that's especially true for the evil ones.
