I enjoyed this as a conclusion to an unintended trilogy, but if it was split into two movies the effect would have been much greater with the first film ending with Bruce Wayne having had his back broken and thrown into the pit, leaving Bane to reign over Gotham.
There aren’t many movie franchise entries where the bad guy wins, I can only think of Empire Strikes Back, but if Batman had utterly lost in this film it would have given hopelessness to all of Gotham. The film would of ended on a dark note leaving fans excited for the fourth and final film.
Two films would also have had time to flesh out characters more such as Blake, Catwoman and Talia and even introduce a few more villains in supporting roles once Gotham was in chaos such as Penquin, Zsasz and notable League of Assassins characters working with Bane.
I’d of also called Blake Dick Grayson, have him become Nightwing at the end and not have Bruce Wayne retired for so long between the Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises.

That sounds like a good plan, but unlikely, in my opinion. By The Dark Knight Rises, it appeared that Nolan had run out of steam. Thus, another Batman film seemed like a pain in the butt for him, much less two.
