I have to agree with you there.. I did enjoy Titanic, don't think I'll be watching it again though.
Good Will Hunting is a more absorbing drama, as well as leaving a message. I've watched it a few times.
Love the interaction between Will and Sean.
I have no idea how the Oscar's work but I've noticed over the years some of the crappiest movies (that's just my opinion) seem to win the coveted prize.
It was far more engrossing and heartfelt, yet at the same time authentic, thought provoking and entertaining. Should have won.
I dunno, it felt quite pretentious full of cliche about savant with problems and good old wise teacher with dead wife, doesn't sound very original to me. I liked GWH for sure more than Titanic, but I don't think either of them are really Oscar worthy movies. Though that year was pretty bad judging by nominees, As good as it gets is nice comedy but again not worth Oscar, Full monty no comment, only worth considering would be LA Confidential but also quite pretentious. The Sweet Hereafter would be probably my choice that year, it's also quite prentetious seem like made to win Oscar critics but it's good movie, Donnie Brasco and Gattaca were also quite good, but there is no way scifi like that is gonna win Oscar.
I don't get the Oscar's at all. I remember one year Cher won with her movie Moonstruck over Glenn Close's Fatal Attraction. Moon Struck was good, but Fatal Attraction amazing acting by Glenn Close, she really came across as insane. I believe she should have won the Oscar that year.
I don't understand their criteria for Oscars awards.

I love Gattaca, scifi is underrepresented at the Oscars... LA Confidential was fun even though I can see how it can be considered pretentious

No. This was more niche. Titanic deserved it over this no questions, but I liked GWH slightly more...
