Discuss Mortal Kombat

I really liked the original Mortal Kombat movie even with it's PG13 handicap. Heck, I even liked the sequel that often gets a lot of flack. I really hoped this reboot would turn out good, but it's just not that great. I think one of the most bizarre decisions they made is to include some new made up character called 'Cole Young' as the leading character in the movie. With Mortal Kombat you have a franchise that has a roster of, what, at least dozens of well established and very well known characters, and instead of picking one you make up some silly utterly boring and uninteresting MMA* fighter who looks like he got lost at the studio and was supposed to be shooting 'Never Back Down 3' or the sequel to that crappy superpower movie 'Project Power', but instead stumbled onto the set of Mortal Kombat. Not only that, but they had to include his equally boring and uninteresting family in the movie too. There's also the bizarre decision they made with the music. "Techno Syndrome" aka. 'MK theme' is probably one of the best known theme musics of all time. However throughout the movie it is nowhere to be found (besides a little remixed tune played shortly) and you think "I guess they couldn't get the rights to the song or want to pay for it". Then you get to the end of the movie and the credits roll in and the MK theme song starts playing. Maybe that music would have been put to better use in the movie instead of the totally forgettable and generic stuff that is played all throughout the movie.

I should also add that fight scenes aren't all that good and they are very forgettable. At least in the the original MK and MK2 where you had a lot of impressive fight choreography that made you want to rewind and see the stunts done again. Nothing like that in here and mostly it seems to be people throwing haymakers at each other - especially done by the lead.

I haven't read the reviews yet, but noticed the rating was 6.6 on a certain other movie site. I guess a lot of people also didn't find it all that special because usually these new movies first get rated to high heaven and crap like Kong vs. Godzilla can have like a 8-9+rating.

Also didn't Raiden hype up 'Scorpion' as the greatest ninja who ever lived in the movie. That dude got his a$$ kicked twice and that was only in this movie! He had to resort to cheap tactics and sucker punch (or sucker sting)and tag team his mortal enemy to get anything done. In my opinion he is way down the list and I'd rather have the turtles guard my back and hell even Chris Farley's character from Beverly Hills Ninja would probably do a better job.

*I love the MMA fight in the beginning where Cole has knee on belly on his opponent and is repeatedly hitting him in the head and the opponent is doing nothing to defend them and this genius and very authentic 'MMA fighter' decides to go for an armbar. Seems legit.

They cast Lewis Tan as Cole Young because of his good looks can you think of any other original Mortal Kombat game characters like that?

Yeah, I have to agree. Giving it an R rating didn't really do anything to boost the fights, just added a lot of blood to already forgettable action scenes. Also, when are they ever going to get the term Flawless Victory right?

an r rating is not required to boost the fights or action sequences, alligator

Tell that to Deadpool fans. 😂

I enjoyed it. Went into the film with 0 real expectations (other than it would be better than Annihilation) and I thought it was decent to good.

Yeah, agree with you on this because I had the exact same expectations. The best thing about it was Kano, he was surprisingly funny throughout.

Not to keep bagging on this movie, but I had a chance to re-watch the 1995 MK movie and I would have to say it's miles above this new movie. Most notably the casting, fight choreography and music, not to mention not including some totally bland uninteresting new character for no reason. As far as the actors go I specifically have to mention Robin Shou and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa who played Shang Tsung and actually put some effort into the character unlike the actor who played Shang Tsung in this new movie and he looks like he is about to fall asleep any minute and is about as menacing as a purring kitten. Robin Shou, who played Liu Kang in the original, actually looks like he can fight his way out of wet paper bag unlike the new Liu Kang and it seems like getting into a fistfight is the least of his worries when a simple gust of wind looks like it would blow him away.

Oh well, hopefully they'll do better if they get a chance to do a sequel.

This old turd is now doing the rounds on my local TV channels and I had forgotten how bad it really was. Crappy story, crappy fight scenes, crappy music and super crappy actors with Raiden, Cole, Liu Kang and Shang Tsung being real bottom of the barrel picks. After this movie turned out to be such a disaster I was hopeful they had forgotten their idea of making a sequel, but apparently it is still in the works and retains just about all of the subpar cast like the made up "Cole" character nobody asked for.
