Discuter de Love, Simon

...for those who have seen it already here's what I had issues with or just don't get:

1) Why is being gay such a big deal in 2018 at this high school and why is there only one other known gay student (a very obvious, effeminate "queen")? Again, this is current-day.

2) The principal/guidance counselor (or whoever he was) was way over the top and a typical movie character they put in high school movies that doesn't ring true whatsoever.

3) When they tried to mislead us as to who the unknown correspondent "Blue" was they would show possible scenarios for each person he suspected, but when they showed the actual person they showed a white guy typing (without showing his entire face of course), which was hinted at being the actual guy, yet it turns out to be Bram, who is black.

4) Why was Simon's bff girlfriend Leah so upset that he told her she should date Spencer? How was he to know she liked him (Simon)? I don't get her outrage when she said, "I can accept you being gay but not encouraging me to date another guy".

5) And is making it both a gay and interracial thing perhaps too much of a stretch when trying to reach a mainstream audience to accept being gay as no big deal in today's world? I mean, perhaps many conservatives will see this as too much of a liberal push.

1) Homophobia is alive and well, even in relatively liberal western countries. If you're gay your life will be harder. Some people will hate you for it. There are, of course, other gay guys in the school, but there is one guy who is known to everyone because he is so flamboyantly gay that it's impossible for him to hide it.

2)The movie isn't going for straight up gritty realism. He's just a bit of comic relief.

3)The faceless stand in was just used when Simon couldn't picture who he really was, it wasn't actually the guy.

4) Leah was upset because he convinced her to give it a shot with a guy that he knew wasn't actually interested in her and was in love with someone else. She said he "set [her] up to get [her] heart broken".

5) I don't think most conservatives care that much about that anymore. I think it would be a very tiny minority who have a problem with it and those people are unlikely to give a movie lead by a gay character a look over in the first place.

I don't recall Leah saying that she knew, or that even Simon knew for a fact, that the guy wasn't interested in her. All he did was encourage her to give it a shot. Was it clear that Simon knew (and if he did, that Leah knew that Simon knew) that the guy wasn't interested in her? Just seemed like a suggestion that she could take or leave if she wanted. She acted like he forced them together or was betrayed deliberately or in a convoluted conspiracy. I understand partly but I still think her reaction was over the top, like it was a deliberate betrayal meant to hurt her. Also, she acted like Simon knew she was interested in himself yet led her on, which from what I remember he did not.

They showed the faces of his friends who he thought it could be so we know that was him just imagining. But when they only show the hands of one person to me that signifies that that is the actual writer. I think that was unnecessary because it is a movie trope that led us to believe the one they weren't showing the face of (the white guy/hands) was real -- which is why he was the only one they didn't show the face of. Needless misdirection in my opinion. Why pick one person to only show the hands of if he was just imagination like the ones they did show the face of?

Not seen it as it didn't sound like my thing, but...

1) This is what I thought when I read about the film. 5) I suppose they meant Simon - but I did read a review complaining that, by making the protagonist a white middle-class male (who was "only" homosexual), there wasn't sufficient representation of other ethnicities or sexualities rolling_eyes .

Saw on of the TV spots and the poster, both of which seemed a to be a bit coy about Simon's sexuality.

1) I think being gay is still a big deal especially if you are growing up in a red state and in conservative burbs. Im not sure if the movie even said where they lived but it was filmed in Georgia right? Georgia has laws against sodomy still did you know that? I remember someone pointing this out to me because he was telling me that John Elton lives in Georgia, even though that state has a law like that still.

2)I actually had a few teachers, guidance counselors who were very sketchy. One GC even acted like a stereotypical Italian mobster out of a movie always cussing up a storm and using racial slurs and telling us how he'd do sexual acts to the hotter chicks in our 8th grade class, yes 8th grade! So these guys do exist in schools. Not everyone is professional and some even cross the lines.

3) I also took it as who ever Simon was currently hoping or envisioning at that time was who was typing away, I don't think they mean to mislead us.

4) That whole scene wasn't done well in my opinion as well. I think literally anytime a girl sleeps over at a dude's room and they are pretty much sleeping next to each other and nothing happens then you are either in the FRIEND ZONE or the guys not into you or he's gay. Also if he's like super religious that might be another reason, but a super religious guy would never have a girl sleep over in his room either. So that scene should have told her Leah that he's either gay, not into her or they are officially FRIEND ZONED.

5) This is very interesting as well. I also found it odd, that there was NO ASIAN kids at all in the school right? Also I don't think I saw any Latinos, Middle Eastern kids? It was all mostly white with a handful of black or bi-racial black kids right? I'm always the first to notice these annoying little details in movies.
