已过不惑之年的阿平（小沢昭一 饰）以制作色情音像制品为生，偶然机缘他和房东——松田理发店的未亡人阿春（坂本スミ子 饰）相恋，并成为了实质上的夫妻。阿春虽渴望新的生活，但是心中却有着深深的忌惮。她相信丈夫去世那天降生的鲤鱼便是丈夫的化身，因此鲤鱼任何异常的表现都牵动着她敏感的神经。阿春还有一双儿女，幸一（近藤正臣 饰）是一名久久离不开母亲呵护的高中生，女儿惠子（佐川啓子 饰）则显得过于独立，且和阿平之间有着纠缠不清的暧昧。随着阿春突然病倒，这个普通却又奇怪的小家庭慢慢走向失衡。

Director Shohei Imamura has always delighted in the kinky exploits of lowlifes, and in this 1966 classic, he finds subversive humor in the bizarre dynamics of Haru, her Oedipal son, and her daughter, the true object of her pornographer-boyfriend’s obsession. Imamura’s comic treatment of such taboos as voyeurism and incest sparked controversy when the film was released, but The Pornographers has outlasted its critics, and now seems frankly ahead of its time.

La vita lavorativa di Ogata presenta diversi problemi, sia con la giustizia, in quanto commerciante di riviste pornografiche, sia con la yakuza, interessata alla barberia della sua compagna Haru, già vedova del suo precedente marito. La vita familiare è ugualmente complicata, a causa della malattia di Haru e del pessimo rapporto che lui ha con i figli di lei Keiko e Koichi. Il giorno in cui Ogata scopre di provare attrazione per la figliastra quindicenne Keiko, la già precaria situazione familiare subisce un duro colpo; Haru viene ricoverata in gravi condizioni all'ospedale per poi morire in preda alla follia, Koichi diviene uno sbandato, Keiko entra in una gang e si fidanza con il boss. Lo stesso Ogata viene arrestato e successivamente perde tutti i soldi investiti nella pornografia. Nonostante gli eventi, Ogata troverà il modo di ripartire, buttandosi a capofitto nel progetto di una bambola gonfiabile.

무능한 포르노감독은 과부 미용사를 등쳐먹고 살면서, 과부의 딸과도 관계를 맺는다. 과부는 아들과도 엉겁결에 성적 관계를 가진다. 병든 과부는 죽어가며 딸과 결혼해달라고 부탁한다. 과부의 딸과 유산은 물려받았지만, 포르노감독은 경찰서에 수시로 끌려가는 등 시련을 겪고 성불능까지 닥치자 문득 뭔가를 깨닫고 한 가지 일에 몰두한다. 어떤 불평도 없고 완벽하게 아름다운 여자, 바로 마네킹을 만드는 일. 북극수출 제안도 거부하고 바다 가운데로 밀려가는 돗단배 안에서 늙은 감독은 마네킹에 음모를 심어준다.

Historia acerca de Ogawa, un hombre que mantiene una relación con una mujer viuda, todavía joven, que tiene un hijo y una hija adolescentes. Aunque la mujer cree que él se dedica a la venta de instrumentos quirúrgicos, en realidad sus ingresos provienen de la elaboración y venta de material pornográfico, y de negociar encuentros con falsas vírgenes para viejos clientes. Mientras el hijo padece complejo de Edipo y quiere poner a su madre en contra de Ogawa, éste se siente cada vez más atraído hacia su jovencísima hijastra. A su vez, la viuda está convencida de que su difunto marido se ha reencarnado en la forma de una carpa que habita en la pecera de su casa, y que chapotea en el agua cada vez que presencia un hecho que desaprueba. Polémico film de Imamura que causó controversia en su día por el osado y cómico tratamiento de ciertos tabús como el voyeurismo y el incesto.
