Based on three different places, the film portrays the infractions to which people living in modern day China are subjected due to rapid developments: in the deceptively idyllic Yangshuo in the rainy south; in the apocalyptic coal mining site of Wuhai in the parched north; and in Chongqing, the urban behemoth on the Yangtze River. The protagonists give their accounts of the unsurmounted past, the precarious present and their tentative steps into the future. The film thus paints a complex image of the mental state of the people in this complicated country.

Le film raconte, en trois étapes, les difficultés auxquelles le développement vertigineux de la Chine moderne expose ses habitants: à Yangshuo, un endroit trompeusement idyllique du sud pluvieux; à Wuhai, une région dévastée par les mines de charbon dans le nord aride et à Chongqing, la ville pieuvre au bord du Yangzi Jiang. Les protagonistes parlent du passé qu’ils n’arrivent pas à surmonter, du présent complexe et de leurs pas hésitants vers le futur. Jetant un regard poétique sur le quotidien mouvant des Chinois, ce film en présente un instantané subjectif.

Der Film erzählt in drei Stationen von den Brüchen, denen die Menschen im heutigen China durch die rasante Entwicklung ausgesetzt sind: im trügerisch-idyllischen Yangshuo im regenreichen Süden; im apokalyptischen Kohlebaugebiet von Wuhai im ausgetrockneten Norden und in Chongqing, dem urbanen Moloch am Jangtsekiang. Die Protagonisten sprechen über die unbewältigte Vergangenheit, die schwierige Gegenwart und ihre zaghaften Schritte in die Zukunft. Der Film zeichnet dabei ein vielschichtiges Bild der Befindlichkeit der Menschen dieses komplizierten Landes.
