V létě roku 1816 se u Ženevského jezera sešli básník Percy Shelley se svojí milenkou Mary Godwinovou a její nevlastní sestrou Claire Clairmontovou a lord Byron se svým společníkem a osobním lékařem Johnem Polidorim. Společný čas v Byronově pronajaté vile trávili filozofickými debatami, rozjímáním o umění, sexem a drogami, jimiž je ochotně zásoboval Polidori. Pod vlivem oněch letních událostí začala Mary (která se za Shelleyho později provdala) psát svého slavného Frankensteina, Polidori vytvořil klasickou hororovou povídku Upír a lord Byron napsal báseň Mont Blanc (jehož silueta se za hezkého počasí odrážela ve vodách jezera).

It is also there that one of the world's most famous books was given life—Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
