hi and thanks for the list (you should read the comics Blue is the warmest colour if you've not done so already, quite different and ways better imho). Did you think about creating a list with the interface and linking to the movies in the DB (i think it's possible) ?

I haven't read the comics but should do so as I loved the film and have heard good things about the book. Thanks for the tip!

I shall edit my list to include the hyperlinks - I was just being lazy.

I ENJOYED MOONLIGHT QUITE A BIT.

thanks for the trouble you went into and sorry i wasn't clear enough, but i was talking about creating a dedicated list item in the db :

-> Your profile (link at the bottom "Hi rudely_murray") : https://www.themoviedb.org/u/rudely_murray

-> menu : overview, watchlist, LISTS : https://www.themoviedb.org/u/rudely_murray/lists

-> create list

I think using this instead of burying lists in forum posts helps improve the recommendation and search system (keywords, categories) and make people's lists more visible. (please don't quote me on that as i've actually never tried to create one :)).

EDIT: apparently no input for keywords and categories when creating lists

Ah right, gotcha! I shall take a look at this, haven't used that function...

Lists are useful and handy in certain ways, though I don't think they'd serve the purpose you're aiming for when doing Top 10 discussion surveys, since no one can contribute to other than their own personal list. Lists are ideal for categorizing things that you want to be able to easily keep track of and conveniently access.

A list can be set to either Public or Private (the latter meaning visible solely to the person who creates it).

Meanwhile, I'm not sure, but don't think creating lists in any way, at all, impacts or improves recommendations. (However rating things and adding keywords to movies and t.v. shows does.)

There's quite a bit of flexibility with lists for being able to customize them in various ways. I've had 5 in place since 2017 or early 2018 (probably no one's ever noticed them); also I created a brand new additional one earlier today that shows all movies, series, documentaries, etc. that I've created any discussion threads for: https://www.themoviedb.org/list/118052 (I wish there was a way to create these type TMDb lists for People [actor/actress, director, author, etc.] profile pages, though only Movie and TV listings are capable of being added to lists.)

Thanks for posting the link to your list @genplant29 - I shall certainly browse through your discussions. It is certainly a shame that the lists are not more prominent - a list such as this would be a good way at getting discussions going.

This site desperately needs more traffic - it has such potential as a replacement for the IMDb boards but the user base is so limited.

It's odd that on TMDb, even when a member has one or more list, their home page shows the "Lists" tab ghosted, rather than either black or in some colour; the pale grey ghosting conveys the distinct impression that there's no list to either seek or to see. Therefore I suspect most people (particularly the IMDb exiles who came to the site mainly just for the message boards, rather than to use the site in any technical type way) don't even realize that other members may have one or more list(s).

You certainly are right about more traffic being needed on the boards. I don't understand why the regulars on certain specific TMDb message boards (we all know which boards I mean) never stray beyond just a single board or two, when there's so much additional they could also be enjoying and participating in. I also don't understand why so few message boards users seem to ever want to either post (create their own new threads) or respond to anything on the TMDb People forum. That area keeps inexplicably going to near totally bypassed (except for the Henry Cavill and Beyonce boards - which the latter isn't even about B, instead is general pop culture/music discussion) waste.

Meanwhile, some members will only ever participate just in a single forum - just Movies or just TV or just People - but not in either of the other every-bit-as-accessible forums.

Yes, once the IMDb boards closed, team Beyonce hopped on over here and became regulars here instead. I remember hoping that regulars from other boards would do the same, but other than Henry Cavill, it never happened. I used to similarly hang around on the Frasier boards back on IMDb (although at least we did largely talk about Frasier!), as well as Film General, Classic Films Board and a few others. While there are other forums out there where a few familiar names hang out, it seems unlikely that anything will ever come close to recreating the huge global community which was taken from us a couple of years back. I'm still not over it and probably never will be.

Regarding the list thing, even if it's not used as of today for recommendations & Cie, I still think it's good practice to use the dedicated interface. The software behind the site may make use of them in the future, and from an information system POV they're definitely more valuable as a dataset than a text post. So whenever one wants to discuss/advertise a list, the least bad thing to do would probably be to create the list "properly", and then to simply link to it in the forum posts. I hope i don't sound too... obsessed with the matter, as it's only relevent if there are actual people to create and use them, just as you both said...

On the bright side, if TMDb ever takes off, we'll be able to say to our great-grandchildborgs that we were part of it ;)

It's been a relatively short time since the deletion of IMDb boards and I guess time will tell if and what other big communities emerge. I can only hope they won't belong to the likes of Amazon, as IMDb does (and goodreads). This extreme action still remains quite puzzling for me by the way, because beyond the inconveninece for the users, which was arguably not their major concern, they did it in spite of the traffic and $$$$$ they were generating.

I agree with all your points, perel. Indeed, creating a list, then including the link to it in any message board thread desired, can be an advantageous thing.

Regarding the TMDb boards, it's ongoingly been frustrating how very difficult it is to get discussions going, with multiple interested people chiming in. Fortunately, despite that activity has been minimal, all of the posting activity of the last 2-1/2 years ago is steadily creating a solid posting foundation for going forward.

If twenty or so more active posters, and of a diverse array of ages (I've all along gotten the distinct impression that probably less than 10% of our active boards users are over age 50), interests, and tastes were to become TMDb regulars (posting and interacting weekly), it certainly would serve as a considerable shot in the arm for the boards.
