I went into this movie with mixed feelings because I really love Christopher Nolan's work, but I'm not a huge fan of war movies. I ended up being very pleasantly surprised with the film. It didn't feel like the typical war movie. I loved how we just jumped right into the action. Nolan didn't waste anytime setting the scene, which I think was wise. Any person with a high school education knows the setup of WW2. So I don't believe there was any need to explain why they were there or what the circumstances were.
Additionally, Nolan is just amazing at creating sequences of suspense. He did an amazing job with his Batman trilogy in creating these patiently suspenseful edge of your seat moments, and he did it again with Dunkirk. I can't think of any other current filmmaker that does that as well as him.
So overall I thought Dunkirk was a very good movie. I actually enjoyed it more than Nolan's last film Interstellar, and it was definitely the best movie I've seen so far this summer.

It was very good. But I didn't like it as much as most of Nolan's other films. I'm probably just used to his films being really long now but I would have liked this to have been longer.
Best film of the summer? Yes, probably. But it was a pretty weak summer.
Best film of the year? Alas, no. Not for me.
