This is just getting ridiculous - is there absolutely anything that they won't remake / reboot / sequelize these days?!

It's true, have writers lost the art of actually doing something new? In saying that, I'll probably watch it because it's Tom Cruise and I love his movies relaxed

I call a conspiracy theory and say that there are actually no hollywood writers left - they've clearly all been bumped off, with the producers feeding old scripts into the ScriptWriter3000, a fully automated machine which spits out bland rehashes of whatever was fed into it...

Basically they sequelize or remake anything they can get their hands on. Personally I don't think it is because of a lack of new ideas. If you look at kid movies or comedies they are always coming out with new stuff. Mainly because comedies have lower box office expectations and are cheaper to produce, and kids frequent the theaters more than adults. So it's easier to draw a crowd in for a kids based movie. But when it comes to blockbuster and tentpole movies the studios feel like they can only attract a crowd if they produce something that's already been done. They like that it has a built in audience and that they can definitively show their investors this idea worked once before.

I'm not interested. That being said, I hope and pray they don't make it an excuse to "pass the torch" to the next Maverick. If they make Cruise the equivalent role to Tom Skerritt, I think I'll make a special trip to the theater and egg their marquee.

I'm wondering if this is a record. I don't recall a sequel coming out so many years after the first. Loved the original, but as Alien said, I'm not interested.

Will Cruise still be a young hotshot pilot?

More likely a veteran trainer.

As a direct movie sequel 'Return to Oz' might hold that record at being made 45/46 years after 'The Wizard of Oz'... Someone correct me if I'm wrong...!

That had none of the original cast though.

Yeah, that's true @DanDare - was just thinking about "true" sequels with at least some recurring cast members:-

Star Wars The Force Awakens (2015) from Return of the Jedi (1983) for a 32 year gap.

And Mr Ford will beat that shortly with Blade Runner - 35 years on from the original! Top Gun was '86 so it won't beat that...

No, but that wasn't part of what @LadyJEsq asked/mentioned... cast members or not, it was a direct sequel...

Wizard of Oz - MGM

Return to Oz - Disney

Strictly it was an adaptation of the next book from the author.

Yeah I get that, but we're splitting hairs a bit as to what a movie sequel is, no? Different cast, studio, production team... I can see your point, but wouldn't you essentially say 'Return...' is a sequel to 'Wizard...'? Characters, settings...

Will it retain the gay subtext of the original?

I'll let Tarantino explain... https://youtu.be/gSV35A1cQDM

Wow, I guess I was wrong. I don't know, seems ridiculous to have sequels coming out so late after the originals.
