Discuss Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Don't get me wrong, it was an enjoyable film, enjoyable in the same way The Transporter was enjoyable, feel good vibes, exhilarating action, a smug confidence that feels infectious etc. It's a solid 6/10.

But the premise is horrible (whoops, forgot about that plutonium I just threw on the floor!), the exposition is staggeringly dense (literally the first 15 minutes of the film feels like an explainer in a lecture hall), and the visuals are strangely tacky (especially the credit sequences, but a lot of the sets and action scenes too). Much of the plot doesn't really make sense and the humour feels really contrived and falls flat 9 times out of 10 (Benji: why's he running in circles?/ oh, I left the screen lock on, sorry). Added to this, the whole cast is looking haggard af. I saw an interview with Simon Pegg not long ago where he talked about his battle with alcoholism, and in this film, he really does look like an alcoholic. The guy is so gaunt I'm worried for his health.

Anyway, long story short - it's a fun film, but the ratings suggest greatness that just isn't there.

I liked it OK but thought it was the weakest out of the second trilogy. Part 4 and 5 I found to have better action and pacing. This movie is still enjoyable from the acting and cinematography alone it's just not anything breathtaking.

It's got Simon Pegg in it.

I agree re: 4 and 5 J, Ghost Protocol was an excellent film. Much better than this one

I like Simon Pegg, but the film petered out for me 90 minutes in or so. At least Alec Baldwin was killed off.

I thought it was okay. Ving Rhames is a pretty terrible actor.

All of the movies are just so similar and interchangeable to me. I can't ever imagine giving one of these movies better than a 7/10 because of that.

Bit of a shame to read about Simon Pegg's depression. Glad to know that's he's recovered.

Regarding the high rating for Fallout, I think the fact Cruise does his own stunts makes people inflate their scores. If you watch the film and think this is a 7 out of 10 type score, and then see Cruise hanging from a copter, you're likely to go "wow, that's cool, I'll think I'll boost the score to 8 out of 10."

I'm sure that's happened - but if you think this is up there with the best action films ever made, fair enough.

I agree with that. I found MI: Rogue Nation on Netflix, started to watch but couldn't decide if I had seen it before or not.

Yeah now when I sit back and think they all are quite similar actually. The thing that is enjoyable about them though is the stunt work and action set pieces never disappoint. I feel like Mission Impossible knows it's zone to stick to and while it is quite similar it never disappoints. Where as other genres at times attempt to do too much.

I agree that they're all (for the most part) solid movies. But for me it puts a ceiling on how high the rating should go.

I thought Fallout was excellent. It may have a few faults, but it was much, much better than Mission Impossible II. In fact, all of the other Mission Impossible movies are much, much better than Mission Impossible II.

I can see your point about the ceiling. To me it's kind of similar to the Mcu films in a way. They have their gems in the mcu but most of the time they don't elevate past typical superhero fair.

Mission impossible is very consistent with the second one being the weak link. My personal favorite spy movie is The Bourne Ultimatum.

@Tectash :🕵️My favorite Spy movie is The Living Daylights.

I see. What do you consider the worst spy movie?

I'm with you. Bourne Ultimatum is the best in this genre. I love the original Bourne trilogy.

@Tectash : Austin Powers in Gold member.
