Discuss The New Mutants

I am super excited for this. I was curious how they were going to implement horror in a "super hero" movie. This not a super hero movie haha.

I have to give Fox credit for their last three movies. Logan, Deadpool, and now New Mutants have their own style which is going against marvels cookie cutter system.

The line about baby rattlesnakes being more dangerous because they cant control the amount of venom it will use perfectly sums up every mutant discovering their powers. Clearly this batch of mutants are extremely dangerous and need to be locked away until they can get help.

Do you think this is before they come under the care of prof x? Are they already under his care?

Really? What were you expecting?

I think it looks reasonably good. I like that they're doing something a bit different.

I was expecting it be exactly like other X-men films but with different characters. The fact it has a different style and genre intrigues me. Yes, it's possible it could turn out like a shitty teen horror. But I haven't written it off just yet. It could just be the trailer bringing those aspects out a bit.

They announced before the trailer hit it was going to be a horror movie. All the mutants we have seen so far have powers that arent exactly terrifying. If you read up on these mutants, thats gotta be even scarier when they first hit with no way to control or understand their abilities. So having all of them grouped together in an asylum has got to make for a great flick, if done correctly. Could it be corny? Sure but i think Fox is approaching these new x men movies differently now than the cookie cutter method.

I know, I guess I thought it was just talk.

Yeah, I've read a fair bit of New Mutants comics so I know a fair bit about them. The characters could have potential if done interestingly. Mirage can bring out people's worst fears and make them real. So there's surely horror type stuff they can do with that. Wolfsbane has a very strict religious upbringing, she's brought up to believe that mutants are the work of the devil, yet she herself becomes a mutant. So there is a lot of character depth they could explore there.

If you know anything about the characters, you can already tell that the horror moments in the trailers where just the kids' powers manifesting, as each scene showed a specific power of the kids. The burning guy in the washing machine was Sunspot. Most of the other the visuals are manifestations created by Mirage. They'll probably do some horror style room switching caused by Magik's teleport ability (I'm not sure if they're going demon princess with her yet), a stalking monster may be Wolfsbane. Not sure what they're going to do with Cannonball yet, I'm guessing he's gonna feel like he's been ghost shoved (during the wind scene)?

Yeah, many of the New Mutants' abilities might be kind of scary to the viewer, from Rahne turning into a wolf to Mirage's hallucinations. I heard that the Demon Bear from the comicbooks is gonna be the villain, so this should be truly interesting. Bravo, Fox. Days ago, I was like, "it's all about Marvel Studios." But this really piques my curiosity!

By the trailer and it showing only spooky things that The New Mutants are very capable of doing. I'm assuming that the whole haunted house aspect of the movie is just the kids not understanding their powers and is a case of them scaring themselves and each other. The whole point of the insane asylum is less experimentation but more a place where kids go to fully manifest or have yet to manifest their powers before going to the Xavier School of Gifted Youngsters to get somewhat a handle on it so they aren't a danger to themselves or to the other kids at the school. The graves are likely kids that accidently killed themselves and each other before they got through the very scary point of manifesting their mutant abilities. The whole "horror" aspect of the movie is show the audience this from their eyes, how the kids see this transition. It's a subject rarely covered in any superhero movie in this light, in most cases we the audience look at kids whining about their powers in the movies and tv shows and say wft? If I had powers or was a mutant, I wouldn't whine about it, it's awesome! This movie I think its designed to show its not clear cut at the beginning and actually very scary, hence why it is explored/filmed like a horror movie.

It would make sense that the kids will see the main enemy as Demon Bear, since it is just a construct created by Mirage's overactive fear and imagination. So plays on that whole kids scaring themselves scenario.
