I removed it a little while ago. Music might be important, but in my opinion it is not one of the main genre.

If you mean music as in Musical (why not have this genre?), then no it's not. "not one of the main genre" again no it's not a Musical, but what then will you call it when "anyone who has seen the movie will know, just how much "music" is part of it..."

imdb has it: "Action, Crime, Music" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3890160/

imdb has it: "Action, Crime, Music"

And Thriller! Sony has Action, Thriller. Rotten Tomatoes has Action & Adventure, Comedy, Drama... shrug_tone1

I don't think we need a third genre. But imo Thriller is a slightly better fit than Music or Comedy (or Romance). But we can wait and see what other mods think.

Ive seen the movie but i don’t think it should be listed. Why is it β€œimportant” enough? Because the main character listens while driving. Idk...

(i don’t think it should be listed for just β€œmusicals” Either. Just because a character sings a song. Instead of it playing in the background haha)

we need an official definition on when to add "Music" genre ? (I think, if "music" plays a big part (not just in the background), then add it)

and please make the "Musical" genre to differentiate between them (I think, if they sing parts of the story ("interwoven"), then add it)

"The musical film is a film genre in which songs sung by the characters are interwoven into the narrative, sometimes accompanied by dancing." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_film

I think it needs to be a little more than a big part. e.g. One non-musical movie I think we could add the music genre to is Whiplash.

and please make the "Musical" genre to differentiate between them

The musical keyword works well. slight_smile

Yes, indeed. I don't know why many disney movies have the Music tags.. Belle/beauty and the beast for example? It's been a year since I've seen the movie, but I do not recall a strong presence of music.. (Reading books, however... wink)

I think the musical keyword should be for musical-ish films. Like... ehh The Wizard of Oz. And the Music for MUSIC films. like .. Step Up franchise, Pitch Perfect, Moulin Rouge etc etc.

Don't know the movie, but I looked it up, and I agree. Also that biopic about 2pac for example, and the rappers movie from a while ago.. Straight outta compton. etc.

I don't know why many disney movies have the Music tags..

I haven't watched any oldies recently, but aren't most Disney movie musicals? Kind of hard to argue musicals films are not music themed without offering a proper genre alternative. thinking

Yeah. But that way music is just stuffed with everything. I think music should Either be renamed musical and Only add musical films (not music themed) or just add the two genres both. now it is as unuseful as a keyword like β€œfilm” because it is so mixed.

Right now for musical films i would use the tag/keyword. As you already suggested, right? Its not possible to search for music genres without musical tag/keyword...

I'm not saying I disagree, but it's hard to plan for the future without knowing what the new genres will be.

Its not possible to search for music genres without musical tag/keyword...

@Travis that would be really useful!! grin

I kind of think we can/should. Theres a difference between musical and films about music. Just as we pointed out the difference between family films and films about families in the bible! πŸ‘Œ

Maybe an example could be added about this too?

And a film like high school musical would have Both the musical tag. And the music genre. Since its a movie about a high school class/students performing and practicing for a musical. Which involves piano playing and singing and such. But it is also Some sort of musical film because there basketbal players bursting out in singing out of nowhere and the like! smile

An example of a musical that is not at all music themed would be helpful if you want to remove the Music genre from musical films. thinking But maybe run the "let's split Music and Musical" by Travis first?

I have always thought Music was a genre we used for concerts only. But then users started to add it instead of Musical when that genre was removed. So with that interpretation, adding Music as a genre to Whiplash would be incorrect since Music is the main theme of the movie, but it's not a concert movie. But, again, that's just how I interpret it. grin

Wasn't one reason we don't have Film Noir and Musical, the low number of total films? I may not remember that correctly. (Edit: For Film Noir the reason may have been it was a small genre not much in use for modern movies.)

I think how you describe Music above is a perfect way to describe when Music should be used as a keyword.

Well dang, who knew we really needed to talk about this?

I have always thought Music was a genre we used for concerts only.

They also have their own keyword(s), though. thinking

No clue! But that would make sense... And I guess it's not "needed", no genre field is empty because we do not have Musical as a genre.

I kind of feel like a good compromise to this never-ending issue would be to mark some keywords e.g. Short, Musical, Film Noir, LGBT as official subgenres, maybe customize them a little bit, and build a pretty list. shrug

That definitely, but it's good to discuss, because apparantly we all had different thoughts about what the keyword meant! I also think all musical films have music and thus, by that logic all are Music. But for example the disney movies, I don't think most are truly Music-themed. Well, Fantasia is!!!! But that isn't a musical film, more non-narrative, images set to orchestra music.

That's a good idea, I also kinda like the more "protected" keywords/tag system that aniDB currently uses for example. Anyone can create a tag, but it has to be verified first. If it's not "good" enough, it gets deleted, or merged with an existed tag. Most of the tags also have clear descriptions, and SYNONYMS/alternative names.
