Discuss Manchester by the Sea

Please share your top tens for 2016. Of course, this is subject to change as I see more films, but for now I am reasonably happy with my list...

  1. Manchester by the Sea (Kenneth Lonergan)
  2. Being 17 (Andre Techine)
  3. Moonlight (Barry Jenkins)
  4. Paterson (Jim Jarmusch)
  5. Elle (Paul Verhoeven)
  6. I, Daniel Blake (Ken Loach)
  7. The Handmaiden (Park Chan-wook)
  8. American Honey (Andrea Arnold)
  9. After the Storm (Hirokazu Koreeda)
  10. A Monster Calls (J.A. Barona)

Think I've seen enough of 2016 to make a list now...

  1. Manchester By the Sea
  2. Deadpool
  3. Arrival
  4. The Handmaiden
  5. Captain America: Civil War
  6. Everybody Wants Some!!
  7. My Life as a Courgette (My Life as a Zucchini)
  8. Nocturnal Animals
  9. Train to Busan
  10. Sausage Party

A very good year. I had to miss out loads that I really wanted to put in. I can't believe I missed out Moonlight and Captain Fantastic. And there's still a few films from this year I haven't seen yet that I intend to see.

I'm very tempted to thief Bratface's idea and do an Honorable mentions list.

Here are some that would make my top ten list (UK release dates), in no particular order...

  • Silence (Martin Scorsese)
  • Lost City of Z (James Grey)
  • Indignation (James Schamus)
  • Jackie (Pablo Larrain)
  • The Neon Demon (Nicholas Winding Refin)
  • The 9th Life of Luis Drax (Alexandre Aja)

It's the year where Grey reminded us that cinema can be big, Scorsese deals with his nihilism and spirituality head on and Aja's artistry and magic realism is ignored...

Both Silence and The Neon Demon both threatened my top ten. I should watch The 9th Life of Luis Drax because I do really like Alexandre Aja.

In no particular order:

The Handmaiden

The Age of Shadows

Dancer

The Eagle Huntress

Finding Dory

Box Office Mojo says that 736 movies were released in 2016. There some I have yet to see, so I'll come back after watching them & maybe add more?
