Discuss The Secret Life of Pets

An incredible amount of hard work goes into animated films. It's always disappointing if the result doesn't compare to the efforts. In this case, the film lacks serious storytelling. It feels like a very corporate compromise to please the masses. They should have better called it "Funny-Animal-Youtube-Videos - The Movie".

Yeah, mediocre movie. 3/10.

It was O.k.for a kids movie.

The thing is, these films are advertised not as "kids" but as "family" films, a genre established by Disney. It means, the film is made to appeal a wide range of age. Colorful and fun on the surface for the younger, more subtle themes at the core for the older. This one just didn't meet the standards of that genre.

Have to agree, bit of a Toy Story rip off.

I agree, I was disappointed. It had so much potential but went off the rails pretty quickly. It was a mess.

I think this film is also a good case for why it's not always a good idea to hire celebrities to voice animated features, rather than voice actors. I love Louis CK, but he's not a voice actor.

I watched the first 20 minutes or so and then gave up on it.

I agree. I very much enjoyed Zootopia and well.. this was just disappointing compared to that. Maybe it is that I don't have pets, and would've liked it more otherwise. (Although, do have lots of cats here, but all of them live outside and in our sheds. So yeah.)

Naw, that's not why. It just wasn't that great. I think it all just came down to execution. The story at it's base just wasn't strong enough. Voice acting was great, production value was high, but in the end, the story just fell kind of flat.

I have to agree this wasn't very good. The best part for me was that some of the animal mannerisms were pretty spot-on and at times funny, but the story was bland and certain scenes were just tacky and annoying. The animation was decent but to be expected these days, nothing really captivating or memorable.

This movie was a classic case of "all of the funny scenes are in the trailer".

Agree about the lack of good storytelling. I don't even remember what the story was, and I can't even be bothered to look it up.

Also, why does this notion exist that kids movies don't have to be good? Just because it's a kids movie doesn't mean that no one should care for quality any more. Kids aren't dumb. Unless maybe they are made dumb by all these mediocre and totally unchallenging films. There are enough excellent kids movies out there, just stop dragging your kids to the dumb ones.

SunParakeet, This isn't great. Ive seen worse kids movies than this. Ever watched Mac and Me.
