Discuss Captain Marvel

Is it just me or is this movie starting to look terrible?

I love Marvel, I've seen nearly all of their last 10 movies or so in theaters, but I am getting a really bad feeling about Captain Marvel. They are really leaning into this "strong female character" virtue signaling and that's always a bad sign as evidenced by Ghostbusters, it tells me they can't sell the movie on just being good, they have to try and imply if you don't see it or aren't excited about it you must hate women. The images I've seen look blah and Brie Larson just does not seem like a good fit for this role let alone what she's been saying on social media.

Conversely I never got this feeling with the Wonder Woman movie, and of course movies like Atomic Blonde or Mad Max Fury Road weren't sold on female empowerment even though both films had fantastic female characters and could have easily tried to hype that aspect.

There's a new saying "Get Woke Go Broke" which means that whenever a movie/show/book tries to sell you on how it's so pro woman/gay/trans/minority/whatever while not selling the story or characters then it's pretty much confirmed to be trash and no one buys it. I really hope I'm wrong but I fear the MCU is going to fall into this trap and go the way of Disney Star Wars.

Captain Marvel has always been a strong woman since before social justice. I'm warming to Brie Larson in the role (for now) but at the moment your whining is unfair so far I'm liking what I'm seeing in pictures and reading in plot details about this movie.

Wow, whining? You must be great at parties.

What does Captain Marvel being a "strong woman" mean? Batman and Superman aren't sold as "strong males". Neither are Iron Man or Thor. Batman's a vigliante, Superman's an alien, Iron Man has a suit, Thor is a god, that's how those characters were presented to us, those are the attributes that make them interesting.

Captain Marvel is advertised as a woman/pilot with undefined powers. Why exactly should I be excited about this character aside from the fact she's a she? I know some of Ms/Captain Marvel's history, but assuming I didn't and knew nothing about the character, what have they shown us so far that makes this look even remotely interesting?

Wonder Woman 1984 has done a much better job making me interested even though I know just as little about its plot and I don't even like the DCEU aside from the first Wonder Woman.

While I'll admit that the all female top gun vibes I'm getting from Cap Marvel is cringeworthy, there's no way in hell Wonder woman 2 looks any better than this. Chris Pine resurrected does fuckk all.

You're entitled to that opinion and I'm not going to insult you for it, but at least Wonder Woman 1984 isn't flaunting how "woke" it is and its star isn't insulting people's opinions based on their race or gender. Also WW1984 at least lets us know what era it's in. If not for 2-eyed Nick Fury I'd have no clue how far before Iron Man it's set.

There hasn't even been a trailer but the OP feels compelled to moan.

How am I insulting you? Are you serious right now...

Maybe go back and re-read your first reply.

Moan? Yeah, sure, voicing concerns are now considered moaning. Buy a dictionary.

And you're right, we haven't had a trailer yet, just a highly publicized spread in EW with some incredibly underwhelming stills. If the trailer is incredibly I'll take back my concerns but if it's not I assume you'll never admit it.

Im going to have to agree with the topic creator on this one. When I first heard about Wonder Woman all I could think of was the SJWs screaming and man bashing. Not to mention the tried and failed attempt at an all female only screening. That shit didnt go over. But when I saw the film I didnt see anything like that. No man bashing, no Im better than you cause I got a pussy shit. Nothing. Just a decent story and character. Was WW amazing, no. Was it good enough for a superhero film, definitely.

Now for Cap Marvel I have worries as well. From Brie saying that critics shouldnt review certain films that arent made for them, like A Wrinkle In Time, have to be POC and female to review that apparently. Not made for white males. To her white guilt shit and her man bashing shit. I just dont see this going over to well. Lets not forget the majority of comic fans are MALES. Disney should have seen and learned from SW. Dont bring politics/gender identity in your franchises. It wont turn out to good. Another red flag is the new Entertainment magazine cover that says 'The future is female'...kinda like how the force is female as well right? Yeah.

I have nothing against strong female leads, one of my all time favorite genres is the revenge genre and that usually involves a strong female lead, but that cant be the only thing that makes the character. I dont need to be constantly reminded 'Oh look its a female lead' 'Look shes doing amazing things, cause shes a girl' 'Girl power' and all that other shit. Give me story, characters, depth, story arc, emotion, and suspense. You know, things that make a good film. I dont know, maybe this will turn into another WW where the final product wont have any SJW shit in it. Time will tell.

Wonder Woman was heavily marketed towards women from the start (and why wouldn't it be?).

I basically had said the same kind of thing in a thread about Gotham a while ago, and I got bashed by someone, because obviously, just voicing this means I must hate women. It just annoys me that whenever they do the whole strong female character thing unnaturally, if I feel that it's forced, I'm labeled a woman hater. I'm not. I loved Ripley in Alien/Aliens, loved Sarah Connor in Terminator 1&2, and I am a HUGE fan of Mystique in all of the X-Men franchise films. These were all bad ass characters to me, that didn't need to go "Look at me, I am a woman. Female empowerment!!!!" They got over on their character arcs and backstory within the context of the films.

The way Hollywood does this gynocentric thing now, it's just so ham fisted and forced, that it tends to make the story not as interesting to me.

Assumption is the mother of all fuck ups.

Would you rather have the Barbie doll model with powers she acted like in her Ms. Marvel comics?

I dont understand this question. Do you mean the characters physical stature? Because I think he is more worried about the direction of the film rather than what the character looks like.

I wasn't talking about physical stature. I was talking about the general media obsessed personality (that had an agent, did talk shows, had sponsors, etc) that she had in the comics. Carol Danvers wasn't really written to have a strong military type personality until she became part of S.W.O.R.D., before that her personality was written more like a celebrity/model.

Ah ok gotcha. Yeah never read the comics. But from the trailer I just saw...yeah its looking like they are going a very different route.

Yeah, and I think it's a better direction, more in line with post-S.W.O.R.D. Carol.

I was discussing the trailer with someone else earlier today, and that person noticed no one other than Carol ever acknowledges Jude Law in any scene. He has this theory that Jude Law is playin a dead Mar-Vell interacting with Carol ala American Werewolf in London. I can see that.

We found it funny when Carol punched an old woman, when we discussed this many many years ago and predicted that the Skrulls would be the villain. We also came up with a scene that we thought just had to be in the movie, one were Captain Marvel beats up a Skrull disguised as old woman (it was supposed to set up where the public turns on Carol thinking that she's crazy, though in this case it might be to introduce the Skrulls), and laughed when that exact thing happened in the trailer.
