what part was bad ass the flat delivery or the over the top rolling of the eyes of the collective cinema watchers?

The shocking thing about Thor's portrayal is how shockingly realistic and depressing it is, it was played mostly for laughs, but if you think about it for 5 seconds, it is incredibly dark and depressing. If it hadn't been played for laughs, you would have been weeping uncontrollably through half the movie.

Thor's story since Ragnarok has been that he was constantly getting his ass beat. If you think about it, Ragnarok is nothing but Thor getting his ass kicked for 2 hours and failing at everything he tries, if it wasn't for the humor in the film, it would have been incredibly dark and probably rated R. Then in Infinity War, the same pattern continues, Thor watches helplessly as Loki and half the Asgardians are killed, then when he has the chance to prevent Thanos from being able to use the Infinity Gauntlet to fulfill his ambitions, he fails again by aiming for Thanos's chest rather than his head.

So Thor has to contend with the fact that Asgard was destroyed, his brother and half the Asgardians were killed and Thanos kills half of all life in the universe, and it is all his fault. He, the god of thunder, the legendary hero of Asgard, the 'Strongest Avenger' the one everyone was counting, failed in his important duties, and he didn't just fail, he failed over and over and over again.

Basically, after suffering defeat after defeat, he becomes a completely broken man, loses all self-confidence and becomes consumed in alcoholism and despair. That is incredibly realistic and astonishingly depressing.

completely agree. it is a choice to see what happened to thor as amusing. i did not laugh once. thor's abuse of his body was clearly a form of self harm, and i'm debating whether thor was passively suicidal. playing it for laughs was a bit of a cop out imo, to keep the film family friendly.

i did not care for ragnorok as the psychological impact of some devastating developments for thor was brushed aside in pursuit of the next one liner. it was only with infinity war and endgame that we get to see how grief and trauma can take its toll.

the best

  1. cap and mjolnir.
  2. thanos' philosophical reaction to witnessing his decapitation. what a total badass he is. i shall miss him.
  3. spiderman putting his suit into kill mode, which i found really disturbing. it was absolutely the right thing to do, but he is only a child and should not be in that situation.
  4. captain marvel being hit in the face with the power stone so hard she was knocked out of the film until the end - i'm not one of those fanboy misogynists that resent her being so powerful, on the contrary i am looking forward to seeing more of her - i just thought that was well filmed and a clever way to keep her out of the final showdown.
  5. scarlet witch fighting thanos. 6 . the cinematography and cgi.

the worse

  1. black widow's death. showing her with her brains dashed out at the bottom of that mountain had zero emotional impact for me as i already say that in infinity war with gamora. it was one scene too many. i would have found just watching hawkeye's reaction as she fell much more powerful.
  2. the humour. most of it did not land for me.
  3. cap not being the one to wield the gauntlet and sacrifice his life in the process. i don't care for rdj/iron man, whereas i have so much respect for chris evans and cap; if it had been cap i would have found that devastating.
  4. the script was awkward at times and needed further development.

What bugs me is that Iron Man wielding the gauntlet was supposed to be the only way they could win out of 14 million possiblities, yet Hawkeye, Black Panther, Peter Parker and Captain Marvel all had the gauntlet in their possesion. So any of them could have done it. Hawkeye was already willing to die for the soulstone, so he would have sacrificed himself. Captain Marvel would have survived using it. The writers have been pretty good for the last 3 Russo films, but they just seemed to not give a fuck for this one.

a couple of additions:

  1. I'll take you to space puppy.
  2. Wasp calls captain America "cap" (callback to when she was mocking Scott for calling him cap)

It could only have been Tony, and not just because otherwise Strange giving up the Time Stine to save Tony would make no sense, but also because the gauntlet was made of the same stuff as the Iron Man suit, and so only he could have stolen the Stones from Thanos without Thanos noticing

Also, Stark is the one who is always being accused of being a selfish mercenary who only cares abouthimself. Therefore, he had to do it because he was the least likely. In addition, the entire MCU started with the birth of Iron Man, therefore, thematically, it is important that the MCU, or at least this era, go full circle and conclude with his death.

They didn't need to transfer the stones when they already had the gauntlet.

The gauntlet that was fucked up with rust after Thanos used it you mean?

And would immediately be killed before they could even put it on their hand that is why they were playing 'hot potato' with it, passing it from one person to the next so that no one had it long enough for Thanos to notice....or have you forgotten that Thanos can shoot beams out of his eyes that 'instakill' anyone? Thanos is more powerful than anyone there, even without the Gauntlet, they weren't going to be able to overpower him, that is what they tried on Titan, and in Wakanda, and it never worked. They needed to outsmart Thanos, not overpower him.

No??

He's referring to the game of 'hot potato' they were playing with the gauntlet before Thanos grabbed it from them. He is apparently suggesting that someone there could have overpowered Thanos long enough to wear and use the Gauntlet, a plan that obviously wouldn't work because overpowering Thanos was tried twice, once on Titan and again on Wakanda, and failed both times. That gauntlet was made from the same nanites (or nanobots or whatever it was Tony called them) that Tony's suit was made of, that is why Tony was able to swipe the gems from the gauntlet without Thanos noticing.

Why would they have to overpower Thanos when they already have the Gauntlet???
