Under en bemannet romferd til mars, antas astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) omkommet etter en voldsom storm og blir derfor etterlatt av mannskapet sitt. Men Watney har overlevd og blir strandet alene på denne fiendtlige planeten. Med magre forsyninger må han bruke sin oppfinnsomhet og kløkt for å kunne finne måter å livnære seg på og å signalisere til jorden at han fremdeles er i live.
