It's rare when a film is a combination of really great and pretty sucky all at the same time. A few less unbelievable action sequences combined with a solid ending would have done wonders.

Exactly how I felt about. Some people think this movie is a classic lol. Like you said, remove the die hard crap and have a bitter ending and it could have been a classic.

I didn't mind the ending, but some of the action stuff was just off the deep end. For example, when you remove fuel from a fusion reaction, it STOPS. Period. And I'm convinced that, even if they somehow needed to vent the damaged reactor, Jim would have been vaporized. Not just "ooh, that's hot!" We're talking fusion here. Vaporized.
