Originally promoted to women, this was initially going to star Joel McCrea, but fortunately they finally chose Garfield for the male lead. And for Turner, this, along with The Bad and the Beautiful, is one of her best performances.

I can't imagine this movie if Joel McCrea, rather than John Garfield, had been the male lead. I don't think it would have come off anywhere near as successfully or potently.
Meanwhile, Lana certainly does look good in this!

Agreed. Turner and Garfield have a certain chemistry that I think would've been lacking with McCrea in Garfield's shoes, too.

Yeah, the 1981 version starring Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange pales by comparison. I don't know why studios keep trying to do remakes of classic noir films. I just hope they don't try to do it w/the classics Double Indemnity and Out of the Past. (Or maybe they have and I just don't know it.)
