I've never understood how, on the island, the ship's crew (not wearing masks) explodes the bomb, Kong goes quickly unconscious, then all the crew immediately approach him - yet none of them, despite being a fraction of his size (and having to walk through the gas fumes), either become woozy or pass out. Hmmm.

Are you sure they were not far away when the bombs went off and then they waited for the cloud to clear before they approached?

All the men are standing or running around at water's edge, at the beach, and Kong looks to be no further away than 40 or so feet distance when a gas canister is thrown at him. When Kong goes down, the men approach him within seconds.
So if the fumes didn't get to them from roughly 40 feet away, it seems like they definitely should have when the men go much closer within just a minute or so of the canister exploding.
PS: Kong staggers a few steps forward before falling. Where he falls is immediately in front of where the canister exploded. When the men approach him, they're on the front side of him, which spaces them a little bit of distance, on the opposite side of him, from where the gas went off, though still within probably 20 or so feet of the explosion spot.
