Il mondo del glamour di Valentino viene mostrato attraverso lo sguardo di Matt Tyrnauer, corrispondente speciale di Vanity Fair. La troupe dal giugno 2005 al luglio 2007 ha girato circa 250 ore. Si tratta di un documentario decisamente interessante e non solo per chi si occupa di alta moda o di personaggi della jet society. Ne esce infatti un ritratto complesso di quello che è stato davvero un 'imperatore'. Tyrnauer riesce a offrire allo spettatore l'immagine di un grande creatore di moda seguendolo nel processo di realizzazione dei suoi capolavori di stoffa cogliendone le intuizioni geniali così come gli improvvisi mutamenti d'umore. Ma ciò che più colpisce è che, nonostante quel margine di agiografico che queste operazioni prevedono, dalla visione emerge con la forza dei sentimenti la storia di una relazione durata 50 anni: quella tra Valentino Garavani e Giancarlo Giammetti.
