Rinaldi is a memorable character in the novel - his friendship with Frederic is one of the most moving elements and he has many of the best lines in the book. Menjou is indeed excellent in this showy role.
Very true. Adolphe Menjou really does know his characters and brightens many a film from decade to decade, from the Silents into the 1960's.
Adolphe is also very good in his confrontational scenes, holding his own no matter what anyone else has to say about it, and whether his character even has a point or not, in many great films, including....

He comes off entirely convincingly as a continental type, despite that he was Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA born and raised.
