Why not just delete the file?

So I'm just wondering why he couldn't just delete the sex tape from his computer's library which in turn would delete from on all of the other devices that are supposedly synced to it?

Movies often fall short of the current tech presumptions.
In Duplex (2003), a guy's laptop gets destroyed with work that he needed for his job. And it's the end of the world. Except, if the work is sooo important, why TF isn't it backed up?
