A dream, did he really shoot her or shot himself? Seem kinda unrealistic, why shoot her in first place, why there need to be any shooting in the end, how is it beneficial for his boss?
Is the story about boss dead wife and her rape real or he just made up story to play with his feelings?

The story is real and you are right, it is stupid to kill Dawn. It's the main reason (IMO) why the film kinda fizzles away into mediocrity.
